McCoy, Tim Oyer and Richard Thorwaldson foug h t for the lead in th e early racing, bu t McCoy was in charge for the second half . Oyer sta yed close and looked to be pr eparing for a la te charge, but he ran out of gas on the last lap . Thorwaldson was second across with Mike Riddle in th ird . Richard Barke r nailed the lead at the beginn ing of the Juni or class, but Greg Muto took it from h im ear ly in t he race. Mu to c ra shed, restarted at the back of th e pa ck a nd fina lly p ulled off troubled by a recent ankle injury. Jeremy Evans charged to the front with a commanding lead all the way to the checkers. Evans took the first with Adam Portue passing Bar ker late in the hour to secure the runner-up spot. The Expe rts a nd Int ermediates sha red the gate for their power hour on the whooped out track. Expe rt Brian Elder, back from a se veralyea r hiatus from racing, showed he had not lost sty le or speed as he led the field from flag to flag makin g IS laps in the hour. Richie Tho rwaldso n rode a Honda thumper to bring the win home in the Intermediate class. Justin Mastalka raced for the lead ea rly before T ho rwa ldso n es ta b lis hed hi s p osition wi th Mastalka never far behind. Honda p ilot Jimmy Craig finished thir d. Th e near end o caused the crowd to gasp and everyone' s hea rt to skip a beat. Simpkins took the ear ly lead and tried to run away with it whi le Jesus Marquez took the 125cc Intermediate lead and chased the lone expert all da y. The two engaged in an all-out dogfight for th e nu m ber- one position wi th Rick y Moreno and Davy Smith running third and fourth. Marqu ez beg an to reel in Simpkins late in the race. By the last tum of moto one the two we re side by side for the final d rag race to the checkered flag. Sim p ki ns pulled it off by ab out a b ik e • length.
