Vincent claims first at Willow Springs Road Race By Eric Vincent ROSAMOND, CA, JAN. 2ll-21 Rain and wind made for unpred ictabl e racing and gave Dean Vincent the first Toy ota ' Gold Cup Formula One race victory of his caree r during the first round of Willow Sprin gs Motorcycl e Cl ub action at Willow Springs Internat ion al Raceway. A heavy sho wer caused WSMC officials to suspend racing for almost tw o hours to allow the high -desert facility to dry off before putting the F-l cont end ers on the track. Chuck Gra ves was th e fas tes t o ff the lin e with Curtis Adams running in second and Vincent initially third . Exiting tum nine to comple te th e first lap , Gra ves lost the front end on his motorcycle and crashed. That ca use d WSMC officials to red- flag the race an d force a restart. On the restart, Vincen t took the holeshot on h is Attack Performance- sponso red Yamaha with Adams aga in running second and Paul Harrell holding third and Ben Welch fou rth . At the completion of lap fou r, Welch d ra fted an d passed Ha rrell to mov e into third . As the lap s con tinued to click off, Adams was slow ly closin g the gap on Vincent. On the final lap , Ad am s was sud den ly all over Vin cent's rear tire an d mad e several at tempts to . pass. Exiting tu rn nine, Adams tried d rafting Vincent d o wn the fro nt straight, bu t Vince nt twisted th e th rot tle and came up w ith just enough horsepower to captu re the race victory by half a bike length. That left Adams with second and Welch third . In the Fonnula Two race, Robbie Dowie and Steve Teschke were the first to ba ttle for the lead. Halfway int o the first lap , Roland Sands moved up on the leaders and pa ssed Dowie to move into second . Sand s kep t up the pressure on Teschke, and sta rting lap two, passed for the lead going through tum one. Sands went on to take th e w in followed by Teschke and Brian Garbellin i. Results F·1 : 1.
