Team Green Kawasaki brothers Richie and Robbie Horton batt led for the spotli ght in the Pro
class at Sandhills MX wi th the younger Horton,
Robbie, pul ling off class victories in both the 125
and 2SOcc Pro divisions.
Richie Horton was ab le to steal one moto win
to break the sweep and temporarily hall the blisterin g pace of his younger brother Robbie. But
Robb
ie's aggressive style enabled him to launch
100 feet or more off the fin ish-line ski ju mp,
pleasing the crowd on almost every lap with his
aerial assault as he went on to take three of the
four pro motes en rou te to the overall wins.
Richi e Horton clai me d second ove rall an d
appearedto be almost back to full race form after
coming back from his 1995-.easoninjuries. Chuck
Shirley and Richard Hiers split third -place finishesto fill out the podium positions in the Pro class.
Shirley was third in the 1250 Pro class whi le Hiers
nabbed the same spot in the 250cc Pro ranks.
With most of the B-class competition staying
at home. Mark Wagner powered his Cunningham Cycle World/Painting By Bill / FMF-hacked
Kawasaki to a four-moto sweep in the 125 an d
250cc divisions with little pressure from up-andcoming former C-class riders Nick McAllister and
Phillip Haze. These riders should be a force later
in the '% season.
Respe
cted 1995 Dis tr ict 29 poi nts winner,
Darrel Bell. cruised to double class wins in the
35+ and 40+ classes on his Honda CRSOO, while
son Derrick Bell spli t moto wins w ith Kawasaki
rider Spencer H ill. Throughout the day these two
diced back and forth . Hill was able to grab the
second-me te win in the Super Mini class to take
the overall. In return, Derri ck Bell proved he was
adjusting to his new CRBO and went home with
the overall in the 8Scc (12-15) class.
