racing sport.
Red Bud's Pro race facility was recently
voted by Dirt Rider Magazine as the "Best
Spectator Race Facility." With the addition of
the Dutch Sport face track, and with each race
at Dutch Sport, that facility has been improved
also.
During the mea I door prizes wc:re given to
lucky winners. Many of Mike LaRocco's old
racing gear was given away, along with shirts
autographed by laRocco and jeff Stanton.
Then it was time to hand out the track
awards. The riders were amazed with ilie pay~
backs of the jackets, plaques, and a bag full of
race goodies to the overaU top three riders. The
riders were called up front to accept their
awards, and group shots were taken of the winners.
The PW80 Yamaha minibike was rolled to
center stage to be given away to a lucky rider
who had competed sometime this year at either
track. It was donated by North End Cycle of
Elkhart, Indiana. Mike Mensinger had his number drawn and was there to claim the bike.
With the reception by the people, and
response from the rider it appears that there
will be many banquets in years to ·come.

Butler blazes at Fort
Hood Cross Country
By Darryl Smith
KILLEEN, TX, OCT. 22
v"Shannon Butler was "in the zone" at round 15
of the Texas Cross Country Series, earning his
first win of the year on the military grounds of
Fort Hood. Butler wiped out his 125cc Expert
competitors.
Butler, riding a Honda CR125, was coming
off a crash at the previous round where he
snapped his handlebars after clipping a tree.
He had an inspiring ride as he came from dead
last to first in three laps. From his poor start, he
passed several riders before going into the
woods. He moved into- second by passing Brian
Barnes on the first lap. Barnes had chosen an
alternate line that turned out to be longer. Butler kept early leader Randy Sawyer in sight for
half the race and took the lead when Sawyer
pitted after three laps.
Butler was never chall.enged. from that point
on. He did faU in the second creek crossing on
the last lap, but no one was close enough to
capitalize on his mistake. Barnes got by Sawyer
on the final go round .to capture runner-up
honors behind ButIer.
The race of the day may have been in the
125cr Amateur class. jason Baber and jeremy
Weeks pushed each other the entire race.
Weeks, who just turned 12, led Baber for half
the race on an aged 1987 CRl2S. Baber then
took over and led the last two and a half laps.
Weeks was starting to tire, having ridden to a
second-place finish in' the Mini Expert class earlier in the day. As Weeks faded a little in the
end, Baber kept on the gas. Their aggressive
pace sent Baber to the podium to pick up the
class win and the overall Amateur trophy· a
rarity for the 125 riders.
Robert Smith holeshot the Open Experts
and ran off with the win. Class points leader
Jim McQueary was close on lap one but suffered a flat tiTe that slowed his pace, making
Smith's race a little easier. Smith's win was not
without cost. Smith was hotdogging it over a
jump right at the finish line when he ejected
over the bars. Smith got up with a broken collarbone, and luckily the finish line was only a
few feet away. Don Henson drculated in second all day and finished there one minute off
Smith's pace.
