NOV. 5 Round one of the San Jose Fairgrounds Speedway Endurothon series saw 117 riders contest three two-hour races over a 1.7-mile scrambles track that starts on the first turn of the not-sooften used San Jose Mile track. Dan Hart and Greg Miller carded wins in the 250cc race while the Hlebo brothers. John and Steve, topped the team of Chris Carr and Jon Smith, on a trick new XR400 in the Open class. Paul "Corky" Bergstrom debuted his new National number 62 while teaming with Dominic Filippi to win the tiddler class. Creat weather greeted the opening event as Kurt Kuhn took the lead on his KX125 and then inexplicably disappeared into the pits just past the halfway mark, losing the lead to the Bergstrom/Filippi duo for the duration of the two-hour affair. The XRIOO battle was won by sprint-car champion Mark Chaves over Rod Lake with Phil Reyes winning the trophy in the Beater/Vintage division. Bergstrom and Filippi finished just in front of the Stephen Mannina and Brian Dickey. Jason Murrell did the Iroman stint on an XR100 to win the sore-butl-of-the-day trophy over David Morgan, also.. doing Ironman duty on an XR1OO, The 250cc round caught Chris Carr by surpri~e. "I sure wasn't used to the new start," Carr sa'id. "I expected the old straddle-the-frontwheel bit, and so when Medium Bill said get ready, J got off the bike expecting to get in front and then he yelled go, so J was about 30th around the comer." The race didn't go too weB for the road racing/dirt tracking Harley-Davidson factory slar as he knifed through the pack to come from 13th on lap one to third by lap 13. Sean Lollar, an Expert motocrosser, took the point over the Danny Hart/Greg Miller duo with Vet rider Jim IngogHa third over the Levi German/Gary Miller team while Jason Sirany and Tom Marley would hold onto the Endurothon Sportsman-class lead to the finish. As Carr came up to pass the German/Miller duo and Scott Larsen - who went on to win the Vet Sportsman class - Lollar stopped to rest his arms and let his dad have a few laps, Brett Lan~ des and his new CR250 took over second only to have, a run-in with Pops Lollar and crash. "I couldn't believe it," said the 1995 Daytona Grand National short track winner. "My buddy Sean has to stop because his arms pumped up, and his dad gets on the bike and takes me out." The Hart/Miller team went on to an easy win while Lollar and Landes continued their battle with Landes getling the second spot. Results RACE I: I. Paul 6crgstTom/Dominl Filippi; 2. Grass Motocross is green at Red Bud By Larry Witmer BUCHANAN. MI. OCT, 29 Red Bud Track and Trail held its sixth annual Grass Track MX with just under 400 riders attending the event at the Michigan motocross mecca. The 125 Experts dazzled the crowd with the fastest lap times of the day and good battles that produced sub-three-minute lap times. Mike Roth opened tbe moto with the holeshot over Jay Wagner, Connie Feist, and Steve Rourke. Wagner passed Roth going up into the"Apple Orchard" on the opening lap. It looked like Roth got past Wagner in one of the grass switchbacks. but Wagner kept his Honda at the front with some aggressive riding. Derek Gayheart was on the move through the pack after a bad start. The young speedster was up to seventh by the completion of the opening lap. Back up front, Roth repassed Wagner to hold the lead coming into the finish-line switchbacks. Wagner then kept his mount pegged and moved Roth out of tbe way to regain the lead. The front-running duo was setting a blistecing pace, leaving the pack in their wake. Feist was third and Rourke was fourth. Wagner showed Roth how to double up in the natural whoop section, passing Roth clean~ Iy this time on the sixth lap. Roth learned this line quicRly because he retook the lead on the next and final lap holding off Wagner to the finish. Roth was excited about the win, but the two front-runners were talking to one another on the way to the pits after the moto. Feist came in third, Rourke fourth and Gayheart kept his pace in fifth. Wagner took the final-moto holeshot over Roth, Feist, Rourke. Fifth spot belonged to Todd Warner. Wagner and Roth looked destined to take up the battle where they left off the first moto. Roth took a tighter inside line over Wagner entering into the roller-coaster, natural-terrain whoops. Wagner saw what Roth had in store answering back with a handful of throttle. Neither rider backed off going off the last roller before a hard off-camber right-hander. But Roth had too much momentum to control his RM. His rear wheel kicked out from under him. [t was a nasty-looking crash, but on his way to the ground Roth collected Wagner. Wagner remounted befo-re Feist could get by to take the lead and then regained rhythm to hold the spot to the finish for the win. Feist carded second, going 3-2 on his R&D Yamaha. Rourke had a really good day taking tbe third slot. t~ Resull~ 30+: I. Connie Feist (Yam); 2. Larry Wilmer (5oz); J. Bobby W.lgner (Suz); 4. Robert DiH'Is (Suz); 5. Todd Aickenger (Kaw). 250 A: 1.
