Saum hits Below the Rim Trial By Dana Cline It) ~ .-I OO~ I-< Q) "E Q) ~ z 30 PAYSON, AZ, OCT. 8 Trails Masters John Suriano and Jim Walsh put on a challenging Trials event in the historic Zane Grey area of northern Arizona, located just outside of Payson. It was the Central Arizona Trials Club's second event of the 1995-96 season. Junior through Intermediate classes rode the sections in the morning, and Advanced and above rode in the afternoon. By using this type of schedule, most riders get to have a chance at checking or scoring sections that they normaUy are not riding. Andy Saum was the Champion-class winner on his Gas Gas, while Beta-mounted Bob Pennington took the Expert-elass win over Fantie rider Carl Miller. Rasulls JR: 1. Derick Ce!iheU (yam). BEG: 1. Pearson rocks Moonrock H&H By Debbla Kane SPARKS, NV, OCT. 1 Nick Pearson was the first to get re-entry clearance at the Moonrock 9 National Hare and Hound in the Hungry Valley OHV area north o.f • Reno. The 17-year-old piloted his KTM across Nevada's lunar sttI£ace to score the overall win, making h·im the youngest rider ever to win a National Hare and Hound. Greg Zitterkopf was close behind to pick up the brass in the FourStroke class. A little moon dust wasn't enough to slow Drey Dircks from taking the Vet-class honors. Sam Key managed to jump the craters and claim the Open-class win. "Rocket" Rex Statim was looking pretty spotty for a 4Q-yearold in the Senior Division, _and the bottest Super Senior was Louie Marshall. This year's course was pretty chaUenging, but £u1J of variety. Along with the usual jaunt through the famous "Moon rock" formation, there were_plenty of sand washes, whoops, fast roads, and a downhill section fu'IJ of rocks. Congratulations to Paul Reimel for taking the overall Amateur-class win and to Craig Hoffman for being the top Novice rider. Michelle CasseUa sewed up the Women's Expert class while Naomi Willis just barely edged out Becky Phariss for the Women's Novice trophy. For Team No Snivelers, promoters of the Moonrock, this was a Special event. Along with the help of MADD club members, promote.rs asked participants to tie a red ribbon to their chest protectors for fellow members George and Judy Baker, victims of a dnlnk driver. George has been hospitalized since the August 7 accident. His wife Judy was killed. He is recovering from surgery to rebuild his face and ankles, and has suffered the loss of an eye. Thanks to local tel.evision station KOLO, George was able to see the support of all the racers. Team No Snivelers M.e. was thankful to aU those who wore ribbons and announced that every year, $1 per rider will be donated to MADD in George's name. Results OPEN EX: 1. Sam Key (Kaw); 2.
