.OFF.-ROAD State Series . Round 4: Tonopah 300 Championship Team Race Best in the Desert Sliver I 1IIIIIIIIers (Above) Scott Morris (shown) and John Flores paired up for second in the Open Pro class and third overall. By Mark KarlyaIDlrt Rider TONOPAH, NY, SEPT. 16 tiquette suggests that the host of a party be gracious, seeing to it that the guests enjoy themselves. If such be the case, Kawasaki's Team Green threw away the book of manners in the race they sponsored: the Team Green/ Danny Hamel Memorial Tonopah 300 Qrampionship Team Race. Instead of being the polite hosts, Team Green racers ended up sweeping five of the top six spots, including the first four overall. Selfish? Maybe. Dominant? Absolutely. Pre-race favo~tes Ty Davis and Larry Roeseler, on Davis' KX500, proved almost untouchable as the leading team around the 234-mile course (tearns completed three passes over two 39-mile loops) - "almost" being the key word. "Larry likes the brake pedal low, and 1 like mine high so we compromised," Davis said. "We set it low, but so it would come on right away. It was okay for the first loop, but' (on) the second loop 1 noticed the brake was going away. When 1 pitted, we checked it, and the pads were completely gone down to the metal! It took about a minute and a half to change the pads. Then Larry got on, but it was his first time, and Destry (Abbott) and Donnie (Book) had already been over it so they made up a little time on us. (On unofficial adjusted time, Abbott / Book actually took over the lead at.one point.) When Larry came in, 1 could ~ee their dust, and 1 got a little nervous! 1 got on the bike and said to myself, 'It's time to get serious: Then 1 put time back on 'em:' Indeed, Davis/Roeseler continued to £ (Above) Ty Davis (on bike) prepares to hand the winning bike off to Larry Roeseler. The duo had to overcome rearbrake problems. (Right) ThoUgh mounted on "only" a 250, Donnie Book (shown) and Destry Abbott finished an Impressive second overall, after actually leading the race at one point. (Below) Young Nick Pearson was mounted on the top- . finishing non-Kawasaki, a KTM 250. He and partner James Loh ended up flfth overall. John Flores/Scott Morris turned up about a minute later for third overall, second Open Pro, on their KX500, followed by KX500-mounted Dave Ondas/Craig Smith and 250cc runnerup James W. Loh III/Nick Pearson on a newKTM. ~ Tonopah 300 Championship Team Race Tonopah, Nevada Results: september 16, 1995 stretch their lead, despite additional (but quicker) brake-pad changes. Their time of 5:19:25 was nearly six minutes faster than runners-up Abbott/Book, who took the 250cc Pro win on their KX and were elated. "1 felt it was one of my better rides in a while," Abbott said. "I have faith in Donnie - 1 knew he could do it - it was just up to me. Once my three sections were over, 1 felt good. "I was hoping before the race we were gonna finish top five. Once we started, 1 thought, 'Top eight might look good: because it was so fast. But Donnie just started picking people off real well. It was just so dusty and fast. I'm thrilled with second overall; 1 don't think we would've done it without Donnie:' Book actually finished the race with a flat rear tire. O/A: I.
