EVENTS ; " · . .Edited by.Scott Rousseau I (Top) The team of Dean Steele and Dwayne King garnered the USA Speedway Sidecar National Champlonahlp at Victorville's Speedway USA aboard their radical Godden V1000. (Lett) Nell Alonzo _red to the head of the 125cc Noylce class In the final round of the Shoel HelmatlOakley Goggle S8r1as In Moreno Valley, California. the top five. Once he did he was able to reel in LaPlante, but catching up to and getting by him were two different things. LaPlante guarded his lines as Lavorcie stuck a wheel in on the Kawasaki rider at every opportu.nity for the next two laps. Then Lavorcie carried a little too much speed onto the hairpin comer before the big tabletop: Lavorci attempted to dive under LaPlante, but his excessive speed forced him to drift wide. At the apex of the turn, he clipped LaPlante's rear tire and high-sided his Honda. Fortunately, he was able to step off the bike, pick it back up and get going before anyone else could get by. Up front, a jubilant Alonzo took the checkered. The best Lavorcie was able to do was to close some of the gap up to LaPlante and exchange a few words with the KX rider after the checkered. Polesek and Cavanaugh again rounded out the top-five positions. In the 125cc Beginners class, the series winner was decided in the second moto as the series-long battle between Richard Wickham and Justin Cutierrez came down to a single . point. When the checkered flag fell for the last time, i.t was Suzuki RMl25 rider Wickham winning his first-ever series along with the Shoei Helmet. Gutierrez had purchased a '96 CRl25 for the final round and did not look as comfortable aboard the Honda as he had on his YZ, and in the second moto Wickham left him far behind. Rounding out the top-five overall positions for the evening were Corey Oayton, jeremy Mead and David Hutchison. Results Pet Wet Track STKA: I. Michael Parker O;2.JU!tin Workman (yam). STK B: I. USA Speedway Sidecar National Championship Steele, King land the big one in Victorville By Michael Maher 40 VICTORVILLE, CA, SEPT. 2 -Ji2ter one of the most tumultuous weeks in the history of speedway otorcyde racing, Speedway USA fans needed to have a good night, and they got it with the running of the 1995 Speedway Sidecar National Championships. An estimated crowd of 3800· turned out to watch the three-wheeled monsters determine which of them was the best, and when the dust settled the team of Dean Steele and Dwayne King, a pair of Kiwis who were part of the original group that brought the sport to California from New Zealand, captured the title with a perfect score of 15 points on their radical Godden VI000, which is made from two speedway engines. Steele and King's main competition for the crown came from the team of Peter Lewis and Jamie Macy, who matched "Deano and Kingo" win for win throughout the evening's heat races and ended up facing Steele and King in the final race of the evening, which also included defending National Champions Dirk Gardner and Doug Lynch, who were two points behind and could only move into second overall with a win. When the starter's tapes went up it was Gardner and Lynch who took the lead but Steele and King quickly reeled them in and took over the top spot. Lewis and Macy then passed Gardner and Lynch and the battle began, but while Lewis and Macy were able to dose in, they were unable to pass Steele and King, who rocketed across the finish line to become the new champions. Gardner and Lynch's third-place finish tied them in points with the team of Ian Stewart and Boo Mixon, forcing a runoff for third overalL But the issue became moot when the Stewart/Mixon rig sputtered to a stop and pulled into the infield, settling for fourth place overall. (N Ruulta 1. Dean Steele/Dwayne King 05 points); 2. Peter Lewis/Jamie Macy (14); 3. Dirk Gardner/Doug Lynch (13); 4.lan Stewart/Boo Mixon (13); 5. Don Horsley/Jeff Mooberry (10). Alonzo on top again at Starwest Supercross By David A. Procida MORENO VALLEY, CA, SEPT. 2 Neil Alonzo bested rival Billy Lavorci in the 125cc Novice competition at the final round of the Shoei Helmet/Oakley Goggle Series. Alonzo and Lavorcie had been going back and forth in the number-one slot for the entire series. 1n mote one Lavorcie took advantage of a first-lap spill involving josh Cavanaugh and Alonzo to take the win. Alonzo picked himself up and charged through the pack, working his \"{ay up to second, but Lavorcie was gone, Klint laPlante, riding out of Tucson, Arizona, held on for thjrd with jose Polasek and Cavanaugh rounding out the top five. Neither of the front runners grabbed the holeshot in the second moto as laPlante surprised both of them and led the pack through the dou.ble~horseshoestart chute. Polasek and Intermediate rider Matt Puccio were the next riders in line. Alonzo was on the gas, and on lap three worked his way by Puccio and closed on laPlante. Alonzo tested and teased laPlante for the next three laps before powering his way past the Arizona rider in a chicane. It took a spill by Puccio before Lavorcie was able to break into BEG STK (4-6): 1. Cody Longnecket' {KThO; 2. Mikr Meade (KTM); 3. David Hough (lEM); 4.. David G~ (KTM); 5. Phillip Aube (KrM). Zach Huler settled into second, while Bachman led the 250cc cla s home in third overall. In spite of a serious lack of saddle time in recent months, Hain nabbed fourth in the 125cc division behind third-placed Murinchack. Moto two was a carbon copy of the first, only Ford started better in the second go-round. Ford gained control of the lead position on lap one and was off to another resounding win. Murinchack rode a steady race aboard his Kawasaki and came home second in the moto and in the overall tally, while Hain greeted the checkered flag in third.
