By Donn Maeda Photos by Kinney Jones SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 10 he inaugural Chaparral Grand Prix at Glen Helen promised a little 'bit of everything motocross, fire roads, desert sections and a jaunt through the Sheriff's department road course. During the two-hour event, the eight-mile course would test a rider's machinery, fitness and versatility. In the end, it would be the most well-rounded racer who would prevail. So, who won? Anyone who has been following off-road racing in recent years should already know the answer to that question. Kawasaki Team Green's Ty Davis not only ran away with a convincing ~in, he absolutely demoralized the Pro-class field as he lapped everyone even second-place finisher Craig Adams. "They said this race would have some of everything," said Davis. "And 1 guess I'm the do-it-all guy, so 1 had to show up. 1 tried to talk some guys like Ted Hunnicut into coming out and rac- , ing with me, but they had a big District 37 event that they had to do. You know, a point and a pin... Me? I'd rather make some money." 'For his win at the Glen Helen Raceway-promoted and hosted event, Davis collected $400 ana gained some allimportant saddle time in preparation for the upcoming Tonopah 300. After starting on the motocross course, the circuit worked its way onto the fire roads that cut through the northwestern hills of the facility. From there, racers were routed onto the vintage MX track, then into a high-speed desert sand wash section that connected with the Sheriff's training-facility road course. Approximately ope and a half miles of the high-speed road course was utilized, including one section that had two air-inducing humps. From there, it was back into the dirt for a trip around the ~peedway oval before heading back onto the vintage and .motocross tracks. "It was so fun," said Davis.
