themselves. With four laps to go Nicoll lost control of his HRC-outfitted Honda and spiraled across a rocky uphill into a charging Rhyno's line. Hughes hit Nicoll at speed and the two went down in a heap, along with Team USA's hopes of winning. "I had covered so much ground and I totally had Smets in my sights," said a disappointed Hughes later. "Nicoll was just in there blocking. He was riding as fast as he could to just stay there and I was almost running into his back wheel. Then he swapped on that hill, I ran into the back of him and that was the race." "I looked back and all of the sudden there was nobody else there!"· said Emig. " I thought, Well, that's it. Smets was still with me but there was no way this four-stroke was going to beat me! We're Americans and we don't let those four-stroke things beat us. But I'll give the guy credit - he rode that thing really well. But there was no way he was going to beat me." Emig crossed the finish line with a quickly amassed lead of eight seconds. Smets rode triumphantly into the arms of the long-frustrated Belgian fans, where Everts waited for him. "I wa's very nervous watching the last moto," said Everts, "especially after seeing Marnicq crash in the first turn. I said, 'Oh my.God, it's starting again!' Smets had some problems with his goggles and he was going to be passed, but then Hughes crashed and that was it. It was bad luck for Hughes (to crash) with Nicoll but that is motocross. I know also that Emig was slowing down on purpose, but that was their strategy. You know, we had for many years the feeling of losing by a point and it is not nice. Now the Americans know how it feels for a change." "It makes me happy to win this race after losing the (250cc) title last weekend, but it was still a great year for me already and I am very happy with my results," said Bervoets, 26, who finished a career-high second in the 250cc World Championships. "Winning today was very important. for Belgium and for me. I did not do well today in my class but my first score counted towards the win. At least I got to ride for my country on a team that won." "Oh, it feels so great!" said Smets, who was making his Team Belgium debut. "Two weeks ago I won the championship on the 500 but this is so much different. If you win the individual championship it is onJy a victory for yourself, but if you cross the finish line at the Motocross des Nations it is for Belgium. I felt, 'Jesus, we made it. Not I made, but we made it.'" CN 1995 Motocross des Nations Sverepec, Slovakia Results: September 10, 1995 TEAM, I. Belgium (9); 2. USA (10); 3. France (16); 4. England (22); 5. Holland (28); 6.
