Canadian NaIlonBl Dirt Track series Round Three Welcome back Parker By Frank Wood Photo by John A. Hands WELLAND, ONTARIO, CANADA, JULY 2Z OM Parker, after an eight-month hiatus from dirt track racing, never looked better as he won the only short track event in the Canadian championships this year, displaying a great deal of confidence due to his recent finishes in regional races. It was by no means an easy win for the former Canadian short track champ, as he was shadowed the entire 15 laps by Les Washbon and Scott Sehl. The three riders were never more than a bike length apart, often side by side across the wide, black groove. Washbon appeared ready to make his move on the tenth lap, but Parker held him off in the same way he resisted a last-lap charge by Sehl. "I could hear those guys back there the whole time," said Parker, "but I didn't look back." Steve Beattie and Chris Evans both elected to ride in the states on this day, Beattie presently leading both the 750cc Expert class and the 600cc class in points. Parker's win and Washbon's third-place finish will.tighten the points race in the 600cc class considerably, but Beattie is under contract with Deeley Harley-Davidson to contest the number-one plate in Canada. However, considering Beattie's recent successes in the more lucrative American series, that may be something Beattie will regret. The 600cc Novice-class runaway points leader, Francois Dumas, seemed to be in total command of his final, when, while enjoying a fifteen-bikelength lead, he attempted a wheelie on the back straight and ended up on his backside. Dumas' lead was such that he was able to remount and retain fourth place in the race, thus making a little money and (most importantly) gaining some points for his quest for the championship. His crash handed the win to Murray Morgan, followed by Ken Poisson and Sam Donnelly. The 250cc Novice-class winner Rob Rainville, a local rider from Weiland, got a huge ovation from the partisan crowd. He was joined in the winner's circle by Terry Reilly in second and Jason Spearin in third. Jeremy Thompson won the 600cc intermed.iate class, but had Jeff Berdan to deal with in the closing stages of the final. Berdan eventually took second place honors while Brian Newman took third J In lhe 600cc Expert victory cln:1e at lhe third round of lhe C8n8dlan NatIonal DIrt TrEk 5erIes __ winner John PlIrk8r (11), _1CI-pIKe tlnlaher Scott Sehl (4), lind Lee Buchllnon (90) with thlrd-place honors. The Intermediate/Expert combined class featured two young American riders "duking it out" with seasoned Canadian expert Kurt Bieggar. "I thought I might be able to beat these kids tonight," said Biegger, "but they just keep going faster every week." Garth Bastion motored away to a safe win while Bieggar fended off the advances of Jeremy Thompson. Thompson was unable to duplicate his win in the 600cc race, but was pleased with his third-place results. CN Results 2SO NOV, 1. Rob Rainville (}ion); 2. Terry Reilly. (}ion); 3. Dustin Schroeder was awarded the win in a crash-marred third heat and Bob Hicks finished up the first round with an impressive win over Bobby Hedden. Sisemore continued his perfect day with a win over Hicks in the opening ride of round two. Bast followed suit in the next heat, passing Darrell Busby in the race's late stages. Bobby Hedden got on the winners board in his next ride as did Tommy Hedden in the round's last go. The first heat of round three pitted the night's only perfect scorers head to head. Bast got the start and led Sisemore to the checkered flag. Bobby Hedden looked strong in the second heat, winning ahead of Schroeder and Busby. Bobby then had to loan his primary bike to brother Tommy in the next heat so that Tommy could make the restart after tangling with eventual heat winner Pat Linn. Hicks made short work of the field in the round's final run, finishing well ahead of second-place finisher and reserve rider Rick Schambers who replaced Louis Kossuth'in the program. Sisemore opened the fourth round with another win, after which Tommy Hedden had one of the finest rides of the evening, taking 'to the outside around the fast-gating Hicks. Pat Linn gained an easy victory in the third heal The final heat of the fourth round brought the sellout crowd of 3200 to its feet as quick-gater Bobby. Hedden was passed by Bast on the inside line during the third lap only to repass Bart in the final tum to eke out a haH bike-length victory. Going into the final round of action it was still anybody's race as the individual scores stood with Bast, Sisemore and Bobby Hedden at 11 points each, and Tommy Hedden and Bob Hicks one back at 10. The first of the last four heats saw Bobby Hedden go to his favorite outside moves, gaining the advantage over Sisemore, who finished second while Tommy Hedden fell out of contention and onto the tum-two dirt in the third lap. In the next heat, Busby, who had looked brilliant at times all night, finally broke into the win column with a wire-to-wire win over Schambers. In the night's second-to-Iast heat, Bast knew what Ke had to do: He had to win to force a runoff with Bobby Hedden. Hicks also had to win to tie Bast for second place, which is just what he did, with a flawless gate and four good laps to deny Bast a chance at retaining the title. CN Results By M. Sober AUBURN, CA, AUG. 4 obby "The Blaze" Hedden took a convincing victory during the 1995 running of the Fast Fridays Speedway Track Championship at Auburn's Gold Country Fairgrounds. Hedden, who is reportedly working out a deal with Edinburgh of the British Speedway League, dropped a single point in his opening ride and was never bested the rest of the evening, taking the win with 14 points and reclaiming the title that he first won in '93. Last year's champion Bart Bast scored 13 points to finish in a three-way tie for second with Bob Hicks and Jimmie "The Jammer" Sisemore. In the runoff for second and third place, Hicks outgated Bast and the snoozing Sisemore to lay claim to the bridesmaid spot on the podium. Bast was third. The first round started off in predictable fashion as prerace favorites Jimmie Sisemore and Bart Bast scored three-point victories over Pat Linn and B otic 1. Bobby Hedden Oaw) 14 points; 2. Aaron wins in ri~ff By Don Allis OWEGO, NY, JULY 30 Geof Aaron and Ray Peters both completed their required five-loop, eight-section rides without dropping a single point at the July 29 District 4 Trial, but it was Aaron who later took the firstplace honors by means of a uride-off." Aaron rode first and, to the delight of the crowd, cleaned the section. Peters' first attempt was spoiled when he lost traction only a short distance from the top of the hill. . Aaron's second attempt was another perfect ride, and though Peters was able to ride cleanly up the first large hill, he could not make it up the second. Peters took the maximum penalty for the second time, and at this point Aaron was determined the winner. The Advanced Class saw Jim Fox win the class with six points, and Matt Hughson place second with 18 points. In the Intermediate class, Noah Leon won top honors with only four points for the day, and Senior A-class winner Robert Foringer fin. ished with 10 points. Novices Brian Kavanagh and Alan Williams both finished the day with 13 points, but Kavanagh was the overall winner in the class with 35 cleans to Williams' 31 cleans. The Senior B winner was Don Allis with four points for the day, and Dick Oliver won the Super Senior class with 9 points. Claude Steele won the Rookie Class with zero points, and Tom Boynton won the Vintage class, also with zero points. Results EX; I. Geo:f Aaron (0 points); 2. Raymond Petus (0); 3. TR\.'W Fox (12); 4. Lee holeshots Lodi By Donna Hell WDI, CA, JULY 29 Ralph Lee used determination, guts, and a great holes hot to nab a wire-ta-wire win at Lodi's Short Track, battling Bud Riddle for the victory. Riddle was consistent in putting the pressure on Lee throughout the entire eight laps, but Lee held his own, neyer opening the door wide enough for Riddle to malee the pass. Toby Jorgensen returned from the East with an impressive third Amateur National Championship in the 80cc class and his first 250cc Championship. When ask about his trip, Jorgensen said "Yes, it was a good trip, and I hope to do it again next year." Sometimes nice guys do finish fust. The Black Plate Race was the only amateur expert race to be run at Lodi, the rewards limited to a trophy, a free ride, and a placement number (black·and-white number plate) at the end of the year. Strangely, only a few experts each week contest for these honors. Rob Damron was the latest winner in a real >lbarn-bumer" with Danny Hart and Kevin Bricker, who stayed hard on his rear wheel and finished second and third, respectively. Results P /W /STKI AlB: l.
