FT. WORTH, TX. JULY 23
Oay Hoenshell took the Pnrclass win, battling
Todd Tarver, Dean Lane, and a field full of
Mosier Valley's "black gumbo" mud that turned
small rain ditches into impassable obstacles and'
caked up on the tires until they looked twice as
large.
Hoenshell got his patented holes hot and
took the lead, but was passed by Tarver and
Lane while struggling in the woods. Tarver held
the lead for the rest of lap one with Lane in tow
as the track began to deteriorate badly, slowing
lap times from 22 minutes to 30 minutes. Tarver
. crashed on lap two and Lane pulled over to
clean his goggles, thus giving the lead back to
Hoenshell, who went on to win. Tarver struggled to siUvage fifth and Lane took second place,
two minutes off HoensheIJ's pace.
Th~ conditions were the cause of an unusually high attrition rate, for only three of the Over
30 experts completed more than one lap. Todd
Holder managed to finish all three laps to take
the win over Robert Andrews and Louis Blackwell.
The SO-mile race was cut to 21 miles, but till
took one and a half hoUTs to complete. Seizures,
fried clutches and overheating engines were the
order ofthe day.
The 125s were most affected by the extra
weight of the caked-on mud, but John Giacometto survived to take a six-minute victory over 125
Expert Shannon Butler.
