Smith smokes Mosier Valley Motocross By Chris Boice ARLINGTON, TX, JULY 28 Yamaha-mounted. Stacey Smith came away victorious from week seven of the Mosier Valiey Night MX Summer Series, scoring 1-2 moto finishes to win the Over 30 class in the face of stiff competition. Honda-mounted Billy Harrison roosted his CR250 to the early lead in the first moto. Close behind were Suzuki rider Jon Merrifield and Mosier Valley's Over 30 rider of the month, Danny Lucye. Off to a slow start but screaming up from the back of the pack was Smith on his YZl25, passing riders, most of them on 250s, at a rate of two or three per lap. By the third lap he was on the rear fender of Harrison, trying to pass for the lead. Smith's opportunity finally came, through the stadium whoops, and he passed Harrison for the lead, Harrison tried to retaliate, but fell down in the process, dropping to sixth place. The miscue opened the door for Merrifield and Yamaha rider rooy Maucom, who both passed the downed rider. The duo battled side by side for two laps, but when the checkered £lag came out it was Maucom with the slight advantage. Smith easily won the moto, followed by Maucom and Meirifield. The moto-two holeshot belonged to Honda pilot Lucye, followed by Merrifield and Smith. Third-placed Smith didn't wait long to make his move, quickly disposing of Merrifield and then Lucye over a set of double jumps 10 take the lead. After aslow start, Chappell charged through the pack. to pass Lucye for second, then Merrifield also charged by Lucye to move into third place. Now hounCling the leader, Chappell waited a couple of laps to make his move on Smith; he got on the gas a spli t-second earlier than Smith and rQCketed his way into the lead. But Smith retorted, throttle pinned wide open, and was able 10 regain his lead - clipping hancUebars with Chappell in the process. Chappell waited a couple of comers for the action to settle down and slipped under ?mith to take the lead and cruise 10 the win, followed by Smith and Merrifield. Smith's 1-2 tally still took the overall win ahead of Chappell's second overalL Meffifield's consistent 3-3 finished earned him third overall. Results 50 STK: 1. C.T. Dickey (KTM); 2.
