Bonace stomps competition
at Holeshot MX
By Mark Kromer
LINESVILLE, PA,JULY 23
Tony Bonace continued his winning ways in
12Sec Expert-class racing during part one of the
Competition Riders of America's Summer
Nationals held at Holeshot Raceway.
With well over 300 riders competing in Saturday night's race, riders in every class found
the competition to be Herc'e. Bonace raced
against a field of 15 riders made up of both
Expert- and Novice-level competitors.
Tony Marzano poured it on to take the firstmoto holeshot, but Bonace quickly made his
way around to put a smaIJ margin on the rest of
the pack. 1l\e just-passed Marzano soon fell victim to Mike Damratoski, who was competing for
the second time on a 125 and was on a rampage
for the lead.
Though Damratoski seemed to have risen to
the challenge facing him, he suffered a major
setback as he went down in a sharp hairpin tum,
letting several riders by. Quickly up, Damratoski wasted no time putting the moves on Novice
rider Jones and moved on to take care of business with Glista and Marzano. For four laps,
Glista and Marzano changed places at least"once
a lap, making it nearly impossible for Damratoski to pass.
Damratoski played it smart, as he bided his
time until the fight between Glista and Marzano
subsided, in a wise attempt to avoid another
crash. He made the easy move on Glista and
Marzano, but time ran out, forcing Damratoski
to settle for second behind Bonace.
In mota two, Bonace was again off the gate
first. By the end of the first lap, Damratoski
worked his way into second, once again aiming
for Bonace, In a replay of the first moto, Damratoski went down in the $Dme place, this time
drop-ping back to sixth place and giving Bonace
another chance to run away with the lead. Damratoski remounted and set out for the leaders,
but simply ran out of time; he finished second,
leading Glista, Jones and' Dave Kacmar across
the line.
