Lowenberg lightning quick
at Carlsbad Motocross
By Joe Lorenzen
CARlSBAD, CA, JUNE 17
After a freak rainstorm passed through Southern
California the day before the event, riders and
spectators alike were greeted with plenty of
warm sunshine on race day.
Bultaco mounted Ed Lowenberg was the big
winner of the day by taking five out of the six
motos he rode on the surprisingly dry Carlsbad
track.
Tn his first race of the day, the 250 Sportsman
lntermedjate, Lowenberg went on to win the
first moto quite easily with Rick Price (Maico)
coming home in second and Gary Egloff (Husqvarna) third.
In the second race Price got off to a great start
and went on to take the win with Lowenberg
second - h.is only loss of the day - and Maicemounted Brian Duane rounded out the top three.
In the 500 Intermediate class Lowenberg was
able to win both motes handily with Harry Balker (Suzuki) taking second overall with 4-2 finishes. Lee Holth (CZ) managed third overall with a
pair of thirds.
The 30+ Intermediate class again saw
Lowenberg dominate both motos, only this time
by beating Rick Price (250 Sportsman intermediate winner) and Harry Balker, finishing second
and third, respectively.
The Sportsman 250 Expert division received
a surprise visit from former factory star Scott
Burnworth. Scott showed everyone why he had
a factory ride at one time.
In race one Honda rider John Greenway
pulled a holeshot a-nd went on to score a very
convincing 'Win, while Burnworth finished a distant second after nursing his Honda in with
transmission problems. Craig laveIli was third.
In the final moto, Burnworth took the lead as
Greenway had his share of problems on the
starting line. He was a man on a mission though,
as he sped past lavelli, then set out for Burnworth. The laps went by and Greenway kept
inching closer and closer toward Burnworth, but
time ran out for Greenway as Burnworth took
the checkered flag by inches.
