By Elaine Jones COSTA MESA, CA, JUNE 23 On a track that was extremely rough due to a rodeo the previous week, Bobby Schwartz and Charlie Venegas toughed it out to win the Scratch and Handicap main events, respectively, at Costa Mesa speedway. The track was totally unpredictable and riders found their Waterloos in the corners when bikes hooked up unexpectedly, throwing some of the best in the business to the ground. Direct transfers to the Scratch main 'went to Venegas, Schwartz, Guy Hicks and Steve Lucero. The transfer spot went to Don Odorn who drew the number-two starting position. Schwartz was on pole, with Lucero in three and Venegas and Hicks in four and five, respectively. Off to an awesome start, Schwartz muscled his bike through the turns with his front wheel bouncing like a rubber ball. Quick starter Schwartz then found the best line and put lots of daylight between himself and the rest of the field. Lucero is getting more formidable every week and was running a solid second place in front of the real battle, between Odom and Hicks, until the white flag. Odom held Hicks off until the white flag, but went high and Hicks moved into third. The race was a short one for Venegas as he got into the tapes and it was over before it started. . Venegas was loaded for bear when the Handicap main came to the line, but the red flag came out on the second lap when leader Jerry Black went down. On the restart, Venegas, who had come from the 50-yard line, was in third, with Lucero and Gary Ackroyd the only two between him and the win. It took Venegas one lap to get by Ackroyd, but it was three more before he was able to get by Lucero. Brad Oxley, also from the SO-yard line, got through traffic for the third spot. Schwartz had his second win of the evening in the seco~d round of the Coors Light Challenge. He read the light perfectly and it was over before it started. Two laps later Schwartz had taken the checkered. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Bobby Schwartz (Wes); 2. Steve Lucero (GM); 3. Gary HIcb (Wes); 4. Don OcIoin (Gdn); 5. Charlie VenegasOaw). HDCF' MAIN: 1. Call 1 (800) 327-SECA For Tickets Schwartz again at Speedway USA By Michael Maher VIcroRVlLLE, CA, JUNE 24 Bobby Schwartz is batting a thousand. After skipping the first few weeks of the Speedway USA season, Soogaloo now has two scratch main-event victories in two tries. Not bad for a rider who says he is on his farewell tour. Schwartz took the starting line beside Charlie Venegas, Steve Lucero and Jim Estes. When the tapes went up Estes got the jump but his lead didn't last very long, as Schwartz, Venegas and Lucero all got by in the first turn. Venegas and Lucero stayed on Schwartz's rear fender but neither of them could make the pass and the trio crossed the finish line in a close 1-2-3 with Estes settling for a distant fourth. Randy Evans took the early lead in the handicap main but he soon found he had Schwartz and Lucero breathing down his neck. The pressure of having two former national champions on his tail did not faze Evans and he held on to the lead as the front-running trio approached the final turn. It was there that second-place Schwartz made a rare bobble and Lucero shot past. Evans took the victory over Lucero, Schwartz, Andy Northrup, Venegas and John Aden, who suffered an early race get-off. RICA'S SPORTBIKE ':.' '.~. ~ ~ I.I) '", '" rl N rl >.. ...... ;j ....., 41
