·EVENTS .. ' physical stamina on the part of Allen proved to be the winning formula as he went on to win both motos over 125cc class winner David Hughes. Tim Olson was unstoppable in the 125cc Novice class and even a bad start in moto two couldn't hold him back from a double-moto sweep of the class. Joey Cirocco was the runner up in both motos in his first race in over two years while Neil Alonzo, Kaipo Chung and john Nelson rounded out the top five. Results 50 (4-6) STJ(; I. Wardy whips Perris ByTonyA....1 PERRIS, CA, JUNE 17 Wardy? Who, jeft Ward? Thafs right! jeft Ward came out of retirement and showed the local Perris pros who's still the boss by posting a double-moto romp of the combined Pro dass during the second of two GFt Mammoth Mountain warm"up races held at Perris Raceway. jeff Ward looked like he hasn't lost any speed since his retirement by running away with both combined Pro motos. British rider Mark Broadbelt was the fast starter of the day and led both motos, but a bad case of forearm pump held him back late in each of the two 15lap motos. In the end it was all Ward while Stan Chomer and Willy Musgrave were the next fastest with Chomar winning the 125cc class and Musgrave the 30+ division. Mark Allen, David Hughes and 'Raymond Bowers banged heads in the 250cc intermediate ranks throughout both motos. in the end better "Rocket" Rex melts Mammoth Motocross By Kyle C. Parsons MAMMOTH LAKFS, CA, JUNE 17-18 The Over The Hill Gang had two days of doubt as the snow fell before the scheduled start of the Old Timers World Championships at the Mammoth Mountain Ski area. But while other riders abandoned the event, "Rocket" Rex Staten slayed to greet the bright sunshine on Saturday morning and dominate the Over The Hill Gang Pro class. Staten grabbed the first-moto holeshot pursued by Mark White, Terry Fowler, Michael johnson and Chuck Sun. As the pack headed up the famous Mammoth uphill, the 500s of Slaten and White pulled slightly on the Husabergs of Fowler and Sun, johnson, on a potent 250, was able to keep the big bores in sight as they approached the Mammoth downhill. White tried frantically to keep the very fast Staten in sight, but by the third lap, Staten had managed to pull out a lO-second lead, leaving White to fend off a hard-eharging Fowler. Back in the pack, Sun had come under attack from Robert Weber, Mark Nason, Val Tamietti and Mike Bosworth. The 1980 500cc National Champion put up a fight but was unable tp keep the foursome behind him as tbe race wore on. With three laps remaining, Fowler had pulled up to challenge White for second place, making his move on the back straight. Coming into the berm at the end of the straight, Fowler came in low on White, forcin.g White to take evasive action that allowed Fowler to pass. Fowler then got up a full head of steam and started to close in on Staten, but time would run out before he could challenge for the lead, and the checkered flag fell for the first-moto winner, Staten. Moto two was a carbon copy of the first with Staten gelling the holeshot and running away with the win. By Sunday the track had completely dried, and conditions were perfect. When the gate fell for the first Pro moto, a revitalized White pulled the holeshot with Staten, Fowler, johnson and Weber in pursuit. For the entire race, White and Staten diced, leaving Fowler to contend with johnson, Weber and Bosworth. By the last la,p, Staten had closed to within striking distance and was pressuring White, hoping for a mistake. As the two rounded the tum before the Mammoth Freeway, White cross-rutted, hilling a tree and allowing Staten by with only one turn remaining. White remounted but not before Fowler was able to get around for second place. The second moto was another carbon copy of the first two motos on Saturday, wifh Staten taking the win and the overall for the weekend. Sun, who was also riding the Support class with Ty Davis, had opted not to race the final Pro moto of the day in order to preserve himself as he gets his racing legs back underneath him. Murdoch acomet at Starwest Motocross By David A_ Procida MORENO VALLEY, CA, JUNE 17 Damn Murdoch has picked up his pace at the last couple of races in the Starwest Toyota Truck/KTM 50 Giveaway Series and has taken home his share of first-place trophies in the last couple of weeks. Tonight was no exception. Murdoch combined two moto wins together to take the overall in the hotly contested 12Sec Beginner class. Steven Fox rocketed out of the gate to lead the pack into the horseshoe-shaped start area. A bobble by the Team Aggravator rider in the apex left a pile of riders in the first tum, with Fox on the bottom:,.. Murdoch took over the point position with the familiar Honda of Nathan Craig close behind. Craig was pressuring Murdoch, sticking a wheel in on the leader at every opportunity, but the Mad Marks Motorcycle-sponsored Murdoch was sticking to all the good lines and not budging an inch. As tbe pair hit the front straightaway, Murdoch was doubling the combined tabletop/double jump while Craig elected to single the tabletop and the following jump. This was where Murdoch was able to pull away from Craig, but Craig made up the distance by going faster through the esses and would be all over Murdoch as they entered the infield. Murdoch and Craig crossed the line in first and second, respectively. Moto two saw Dino Reger grab the holeshot this time with Murdoch in tow. The Suzuki rider held onto the lead as the pair rode through the infield section of the course. But when Murdoch pulled alongside of Reger, heading for the Uturn before the big backfield tabletop jump, Reger grabbed too much throttle and overshot the tum. Murdoch wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth, and he took the lead and ran. Craig was right behind him as Reger rejoined the race in third, ahead of justin Gutierrez and Raymond Carvalho. Murdoch was enjoying a comfortable lead and cruised home to the moto win as Dias, who had charged through the pack after a bad start, followed him past the checkers in second.
