Falde boys fast at Filmore Grass Drags By Rose Parmeter FlLMORE, WLjUNE 17 Sweltering 9O-degree tempera lures fried the crowd while the Falde brothers fried the competition at the semiannual Filmore Sportsman's Motorcycle Grass Drags, hosted by the Ozuakee Guzzler's Motorcycle Oub on its dubgrounds. The event runs similar to drag races on asphalt, except you see knobby tires instead of racing slicks, and most competitors ride motocross bikes instead of street bikes. A double elimination system is used, allowing each rider two limes to lose before being knocked out. Two riders run side by s;de on a tOO-yard grass strip. Riders leave the start line watching the lights, while two flagmen determine the winner at the finish line. Chad and joel Falde drove five hours from Spring Valley, Wisconsin, for their first appearance at a grass drag competition and made it all worthwhile. Older brother Chad Falde took home over $300 in winnings, collecting wins in the 251-5OOcc and Open classes, and' in the final runoff for the day's fastest riders. The father and son team of Mel and jeff Piontek stole the show in the 176-2SOcc dass. Both Pionteks were hot as jeff on a KX and Melon a CR easily picked off the competition. In the final round there was a tie between the two, calling for a runoff. The tie-breaker was close, with jeff Piontek bealing out his 4O-something dad. The younger Piontek barely broke a sweat in the 100175cc class where he picked up yet another win, leaving the rest of the pack in the dust. Billy Dei Boehlke blasts Howard Lake HM By TIm McBride HOWARD LAKE,MN,jUNE 17 After a somewhat slow start Kurt Boehlke turned on the beat and scored a double-class victory with wins in both the 250 and 500 ProAm mains at the fourth annual Donahue HarleyDavidson Minnesota Half Mile. Although Boehlke struggled to a fifth-place finish in the 250 Pro-Am heat race, he turned. the. tables during the main event. After the start and some heavy dicing with Verdeen Langland and Randy Triplett, Boehlke took uninterrupted p0sse sion of the lead on lap two. Langland and Triplett remained undecided about who would finish second, as they continued to battle for position at a slight distance behind the eventual race winner, Boehlke. Meanwhile, Tim Zemmanovic and Bucky Lorentz argued over fourth. Defending class champ Langland finally landed the second-place position from Triplett, but only by a whisper. After a well-executed draft pass, a photo finisb saw Zemmanovic stea1 fourth place from Lorentz. Obviously pumped, Boehlke returned for the .soo Pro-Am flnal. He earned the pole position by scoring the heat-race win alter a race-long battle with Mike Hoh. Boehlke pulled the holeshot at the start and led a tight pack of contenders that included Hoh, Eric Brouhard, Nom Gregory, Verdeen Langland and Paul Anderson down the back chute. After the first lap, Hoh faded dramatically when he discovered he forgot to don his steel shoe prior to the race. With Hoh out of the picture, Brouhard stepped up to challenge Boehlke for the rest of the race. Broubard remained within striking distance of Boehlke for the balance of the race, but this would be Boehlke's day. Slightly behind the front-runners, a close three-way battle for third took place between Gregory, Langland and Anderson. In the end Langland would prevail. Honorable mention goes to yet another multi+class winner in the form of Davey Durelle. Not surprisingly, Durelle scored wins in every even t he con tested. It seems every time the diminutive GNP dirt track veteran shows up for a race, the local riders figure second place is just as good as a win. The 40+ final saw Buzz Arndt and john Sutherlin engage in a heated race-long exchange for the lead position. Arndt finally netted the win over Sutherlin by a slight margin. Bob Reynolds and john Gustafson raced to fourth and fifth, respectively. ANAHElM YAMAHA ANAHElM, CA. 92805 MURRIETA YAMAHA MnELOPE VALLEY YAMAHA LANCASTER.
