Over 450 riders from 11 states and Costa Rica
competed in the Southern Youth Regional Qualifier for Loretta Lynn's at Motocross of Marion
County with Robbie Horton being one of the
biggest winners of the weekend.
Horton won six of seven motos, including
three straight in the 125<:c Youth (12-15) Stock
class en route to the overall victory,
In the first 125cc Youth Stock moto, Horton
jumped out to the early lead with Ray Hansen,
. Jason Thomas, Darren McElhatten and Trey
Boykin following. Thomas motored by Hansen
on the opening lap, and challenged Horton for
the lead. Horton and Thomas pulled away from
the field to battle for the win. Thomas pressured
Horton the entire race but could only come
within two bike lengths ~of the winner as
Thomas, Hansen, McElhatten and Bryan Sapp
rounded out the top five.
Moto two saw Thomas rocket out of the gate
with Horton, McElhatten, Hansen and Boykin in
close formation. Horton'slipped by Thomas after
one lap of racing to assume the point position,
but Horton couldn't pull away from Thomas, as
the two riders kept about two seconds between
them.
Meanwhile, McElhatten fell halfway into the
moto, and Hansen got by. McElhatten quickly
remounted and chased after Hansen. On the last
lap McElhatten sailed by Hansen on the step-up
to finish third behind winner Horton and runner-up Thomas. Hansen and Sapp rounded out
the top five places.
In the final moto Thomas led the pack into
·tum one with Horton, McE.lhatten, Hansen and
Eric Barnes following. Thomas and Horton
fought for the lead as they left the pack behind.
Thomas held the lead for two laps before Horton
railed an outside turn to take over the top spot.
Thomas glued himself to Horton's rear wheel,
until they encountered lapped riders. Horton
then pulled away on his Team Green/
Oakley/FMF/Fox-backe9 KX for his third
straight win and the overall victory. McElhatten
rode a strong race to finish third over Hansen
and Barnes.
