Poneloit pummels revamped Orange County Short Track By Tommy Raterman ORUNDO, A.. MAYZJ The newly enlarged clay oval at Orange Coun ty Raceway saw its first short track action Saturday night as Steve Poneloit showed his Honda's rear fen de r io the rest of the field to take home the main event win. The Ray Pippin a nd Jim Nesbitt-designed fifth -mile track was finished jus t in time, a nd promises to be the center of Florida di rt track action on Satu rdays. Firs t hea t action saw New Smy rna's Allen Weinberg lead ihe way. The bra nd new surface was initially slick. con trib uting to a firs t-tu m mishap as Mati Raterman d ismo unted abruptly a fter losing all tract ion . Weinberg too k it away af ter the restart, and was never head ed . The second heat w as all Po ne lo it , as h e sho wed the ot her Flor ida rid er s the fast way a round in the hot night air. Weinberg kep t his Honda within striking dis tance for the first few lap s, bu t could no t catch the thunderi ng Honda ofPoneloit. Weinberg w as allowed to refuel a nd a single-file resta rt was held. . Weinberg had his work cut out for him as he raced through the pack in an attempt to catch Poneloit. Weinber g worked his way up to secon d p lace by race's end, follo wing Po n elo it home to the checkered nag. Dunn and his DTX race r overpowered the fou r-strokes of Bennett and Raterman for third p lace. RRIS, PA, MAY 67 Jimmy Evans went two for two after engaging in two stre nuous motos on Saturday at Hig h Point Racewa y, bea ting out excellent com pe tition in ' the 250cc A class. In moto one, Mike Winslow holesho t with Josh Swea t and Evans no t far behind . Comin g fo u r th o ff t he ga te, M i ke M cDona ld began quic kly picking the top thr ee off, one by one, starti ng with Evans on the first downhill. Sweat took over the first place position in ihe switchbacks, and left Winslow open bait for McDon ald . After mov ing into second , McDonald had his eyes se t on Swea t an d ma de his move on an up hi ll do uble. Before the end of lap on e, Sweat and McDonald went do wn ove r the hill ou t of vision a n d Sweat ca me out first. Eva ns then co mp leted a pa ss on Winslow in a set of doubles . Th e bat tle for fifth wa s becoming qu ite heated betw een Jeff Ene n be rger, Kirk Kru ze , and Sean Hogan. McDona ld, running in secon d, stalled and left the pos ition to Evans, but was able to gain back his mo mentum before allowing Wins low to capture ihird. Hogan acqu ired the fift h p lace po sit ion p assing Ellen berger on a do wnhill head ing into the woods, ihen quickly gained on Winslow and passed him taking the outs ide line in a sharp left hand tum. Evans was gaining on Swe ats lead every lap , a nd on lap three , Evans was on Swea t's rear tire. Eva ns made his way aro und Swea t ou t of vision in lap fou r. Cha d Sanne r slithe red into fifth behind McDonald after working h is way through the pack the en tire race after crashing on the sta rt. Right before the checkers, Sanner made a move on McDorold a t the finish line jump to capture fourth. Moto two saw Brian Ashcraft captu re the hole sho t, but he was hou nd ed by Sweat and Evans. Evans passed the lop two , choosing the pe rf ect lin e d own th e step s. Sweat bea t ou t Ashcraf t in the next tu m . Ellenberge r was followi ng in four th with Hogan rounding ou t the top five. Sanner made his way into fourth, passing Hogan on a do wnhill and Ellenberger on the follow ing u p hill. As hcraft went down the hill before ihe infield tu m and cras hed, lea ving ih ird to Sanne r w ho didn 't ha ve it for lon g. H ogan was on h is back tire th rough the infield tu m, a nd when they popped into vision for a second, it w as Hogan in ihe third place position.
