Carison rod e conservati ve and secu red the runner -up spot on his O' Nea l-backed Yamaha whil e Team Pax rid er Brian McGavran, Jon ath a n Shimp and Monte Mon tague rounded out the top five. Carlson looked like a sure winner in the second mota after Payne cras hed twice and was out o f co n ten tio n. Carlson, however, mad e one sma ll bobble which allowed the "out of towner" Montag ue the window of opportunity he was loo kin g for.
