Brown blasts Muddy Creek By Barbara Williams B LOUNTVILLE,lN , MAY20-21 Co m ing off his seco nd Eastern Region al 125cc Supercross win in four weeks, Hond a of Troy' s Mike Brown d rove all nigh t from Clevelan d , O hio, to add two more not ches to his gun at Mudd y Creek Racew ay. Brown wo n the 125 an d 250cc A ove r classes , scoring an easy $1600 in MegaSeries mon ey , p lus a not he r $400 in Honda factory conting ency . Nea rly 500 rid ers from 13 states en joyed perfeet sp ring racin g weather a t MCR's AMA Suzuki Eastern Contine ntal MX Championships . As expected, Brown headed the fields in the firs t motos of bo th classes, leav ing the swarming hord es to fight ove r top five finishes . In th e 125cc moto, Brown was fo llowed home by Kevin Walker, jim Neese, Chad Lough a nd Pa u l Currie. Neese also competed in the Cleveland SX alon g with jim Chester, bo th earning top-10 finishes. By the time the second moto came around, Brown was pushing 36 hO U1~ without sleep, and his reaction times may have been slowed somewha t. Wha tever the case, Brown got a mid pac k start and was forced to work traffic to regain the lead . Walker took the point position with Neese and Lough glued to his rea r fender. Half a lap lat er, Brown wa s in fourth place , threat ening Lough. At the end of lap three of the eight-circuit mo to, Brown was again in front and proceeded to s tre tch out a 1S-second lead over Walker. Neese stay ed close beh ind Walker, but slid ou t just before an uphill horseshoe turn. Neese was quick to remount and success fully d efended third place from Lough's attacks. Brown easily won the first 250cc class moto ov er N ee se, Bill y Liles, Wa lker and C u rrie. WaJker was first off the start in mo to two , wit h a surprising compa nion, Tyler Carr. A scant six months in to the A classes, Carr held onto fifth place against fa r more experienced racers un til the last part of the last lap . "I got tired ," said Tyler. "We've been having lots of rain and flood ing for the pas t month, and . there hasn 't been any place to ride." Meanw hil e, Brown, Lough an d Liles had go tte n sq uee zed to th e midd le on the s ta rt. Chad and Billy figured they'd let Brown go first, then follo w in his foot prints. Bu t for Liles it did n ' t q uite wo rk . Th e Vet -A thr eat ta ngl ed wi th Cu rrie in the tower sweeper, and by the time they had recovered, most nf the pack had blow n past. Brown passed both Neese and Walker in the woods section for the lead at the end of lap three of eig h t, but Neese wo u ldn 't stay passed. Teammat es Eric Brou hard and Billy Hoffmiester mad e the two Open Pro heat races seem like a wa rm summer breeze, as they both cruised to victory with relative case. But as far as Durelle was co ncerned the forecast for the "Reynolds Wrecking Crew" parade called for rain.
