Pierce, Ingle pulverize Diamond Short Track By Clay U ght ROSEBURG, OR ,MAY 21 Despite taking nine months off from flat track ing to p ursue a m ot ocr oss ca reer, local rider Mike Pierce proved he hadn' t lost his touch after winning the 12Sec A main at the opening round of th e Diamond Raceway Short Track Series. Also hot on the all-new Bob Stro ng-promot ed 1 /lOth -mile oval wa s Yamaha-mounted Bobby Ing le. who wo n both Open qualifiers a nd backed it up with a convincing win in the Open A Main event. First on board in main events were the BOcc Experts, with Suzu ki rider Bo Ingle on the po le. Ingle had a brief encounter with Chad Feely, but that only las ted a lap . After tha t. Ingle mainta in ed th e le a d to the finis h w hile a ba tt le behind him could have gone any which way. Feely scored second. w hile Shawn Bigham took third over Da m ie n Saltzman and first -time Expert Sean Ught, who was fifth . Ingle also sat the pole in the 12SecA main, but Pierce had other ideas . After suffering a narrow loss in the secon d heat race, Pierce wasted. little time putting his Yamaha ou t front for keeps. Ingle used a variety of lines trying to gel past him bu t wo und u p second ahead of Pat Wanner. Bobby Ingle took an imI1lediate liking to the track' s oonfiguration and breezed to a win in the Open A main. Ingle wen t wire-to-wire with only ex·miniey cle star Wayne Frampton ab le to keep him in sight. Frampton though, was well under· pow ered and did all he oould to keep SOOcc Hond a rider Cliff Helms behind him . Frampton, Helms, Tim Nav arro and Ed Derda filled the top five. Results OPEN A: 1. MD, MAY14 Th e Middle Atla n tic Motocro ss Association 42 hosted a Mother' s Day motocr oss a t Budd s Creek which was ush ered in by hard showe rs tha t led to a shorte ned day for the 120 rid ers willing to brave the storm. Nick Eve nnou was the big wi nner, taking home first in 50cc Expert and 60cc Su pport classes. Evenno u, fres h from the Bailey School hel d during the two day s before the race, dominated 50ccclass action, taking a n easy 1-1 overall in the mu d . How ever, the 60cc Support race beca me a knock-down, d rag-ou t ba ttle between Even nou and Derrick Forrester. Evennou grabbed th e holeshot, slipping past the first-tum crowd with a ru naway-a nd- hide look in his ey es. Forrester fo ug h t ba ck a nd was on ly a bike ba ck at th e ha lfway ma rk. The two Kawasaki riders battled the oonstant rain, and each other, into the tricky off-camber. Forrester lost traction and fell in the turn, allowing Evennou to escape with the victory. By the lime Forrest er had remounted , Shane Sanft also got by, taking the checkered just a head of the m ud covered Forrester. As it turned ou t, th e se co n d moto was cancelled and the final results were based on moto one . Eight 60cc Novice riders took to the sloppy track. m aking fo r so me exciting action. Like most the classes toda y, th e first moto would decide the day's winner. Morris Hopkins powered to the win, using an aggressive mud riding sty le in the turns .
