Carlsbad Grand Prix

Joh nny Ca m pbe ll won bo th the Unclassified
races as well as the Open class during the 1995
Hilltoppe rs M.e. Ll.S. Gra nd Prix at Carlsbad
Raceway.
Despite being plagued by prob lems from the
start, includ ing the loss of the original location,
the Hilltoppers ma naged to put on the event.
The course featu red dry, slick, hard adobe su rface that suited Campbell's choice of machinery
to a tee.

his broth er Jamie, who was injured earlier that

place in two ou t of the five races as well.as earning a fifth-pl ace finish in the Unclassified race.
Adams said the course was "good and tight."

Staten. who rode three race back to back and

placed first Senio r as well as first Vet an d was
.second to Scott Sljeak in the 250cc Expert race .
Re s ults
The 38-year-ol d Comer ha d two clean loops
and took the win aboard an Aprilia, edging out
nationally ranked and Montesa-sponsored John
Oark by six points. Comer was the STRA Champion between 1974-1977, and in 1983. It has been
many years si nce he competed in the Expert
class, bu t he definitely still appears to be a force
to be reckoned with.
Beta-mounted Dustin Ginder took his third
win in a row in the Advanced class by beating
out Mark Sturtevant by seven points.
The Sportsman class had the largest amount
of com petition with 21 entries. Aboard a new
Fantie Section, National Cham pion Pate Keen
held on to the "in by beating his top competition. Gary Holbert, by two points. Harry Heilemann hung on to win the Intermediate clas s,
besting Jimmy Upton by one point. Neal Farris
too k his second Nov ice class win in a row
aboa rd a very tired looking Montesa. Following
closely behin d was Donnie Hal l in second place.
Joseph Para dis gra bbed a win in the Junior class
over Justin McCombs.
