(Abo ve) Donald Upto n (106) teamed with Eric Wright to wi n the Six Hours of Glen Helen off -road race, Wright, Upton top Glen Helen six-hour GP By Robe rt Van Damme SAN BERNARDINO, CA, APR. 9 r ie Wright and Donald Upton teamed up together to take the overall win at the second annual Six Hours of Glen Helen Grand Prix Team Race at the Glen Helen OHV Park . Approximately 90 teams participated on a four -mile, wide-open course which included both the motocross and vintage tracks. The Andrew Ellis/Brian Vargas/Johnny Alexander team were first away from the dead-engine, straddle-the-front-tire start and led down the front straightaway. But it was a sho rtlived lead as Wright, who took the first shift, passed Ellis within the first 10 minu tes of the race. Ellis was able to keep Wright in sight on the next couple of laps with ye t another formidable team lur king not far behind . Sta rting from th e second row and entered in the Vet Senior expert amateur class was defending champion Brian Myerscoug h, who had tea med u p with Chad Bloug h and Bob Maxwell. Myerscough was using his familiarity of the course to make up significa nt gro un d on the two leaders. Then when Wright and E Ellis got caught up with lapped traffic, Myerscough was able to.use that distrac tion to take over the lead at abou t the 25-minute mark. Teams were usin g different strategies on how long each member would ride and wh en the first set of rider changes were complete. Upton retook the ov erall lead for the next hour and a half. High winds made it necessary to take the first water break at the two -hour 'mark; at that time all riders were to line up in rows of five at the end of the pit row . When the watering was complete, each row was waved back on to the cou rse in five-second interva ls. Up ton was still in the overall lead while Vargus had moved up to the second spot. The FMF/Shock Therap y / MSR/ Bieffe / Silkolene / Ora nge County Suzuki-sponsored Upton was having a difficult time keeping a steady pace while trying to get arou nd slower traffic. At the twohour and 45-minu te mark, a hard charging Mike Healey picked his way from about the eigh th row, caught and passed Vargus. On the next lap, Healey was able to get by Upton . That woke up Up ton because even though Healey's team - which was running in the Business class - was down a coupl e of laps to the leaders, Healey forced Upton to pick up the pace and keep up. "I wasn' t sure wh ere Healey was in the standings," said Upton . "But it mad e me faster when he did pass me, and made me more aware of wh at kind of spee ds I would have to maintain to win this event." The next lap saw Upt on sha do w ing Healey in every turn, but he was not able to get around Healey until Healey pulled into the pits . After the final water break, which came at about th e fourh ou r and IS- minu te mark, the Skip Fordyce/ Axo /Pro Circuit/ Shaklee/ PJI-sponsored Wrigh t rode the final leg to the finish line for the overall win . The busi ness team division had a litli e d ra ma with a comeback for the In la nd Wheel Ce n ter / LeBu s team of Healey, Bryan Copyak, and Joe Zanetti taking the win . They rallied from being one lap d own at the second wat er break to beat the team of Dave Manriquez, Robert Barnum, and Terrance Malan·. IRONMAN: 1. St ev e Anderson (H us); 2. APRIL 4 Fresh off a win at the previous month's Tecat e Cup T ria l. Sa n Diego Trials Rid ers' Wayne Anders kept his hot st reak goi ng by scoring a solid win in the Intermediate B class at the Valley Ob serv ed Trials Enthusia st s-prom oted OJ Trial, held in the Span gler OHV Area , just northeast of Mojave. A sho rt fou r- mile lo op connected th e 10 well-laid-out secti on s, and most rid ers agreed that the difficul ty levels were up to class. Rocks wer e the orde r of the da y, as the desert locale offered plenty of obs tacles for the 7S riders on hand to entertain them selves on. like the slabs in th e ever -p opular Lucerne Valle y area, the rocks in Spangler Hills offered load s of traction. Pantie-moun ted And ers star ted off his first loop with several cleans, and had qu ite <1 la p going un til he fived section six. He di dn't let his mistake get to him, though, and recovered well eno ug h to take on ly a han d ful of ones in the remaining sections. Rick Cavataio wen t five-less through his first loop, and en ded lap one tied wi th Anders . Both riders had accumu lated a me re 11 points. Bultaco Pa rts Obsolete's john Thomson was close behind with 15, and may hav e been even closer had it not been for a case of the first-loop jitters. Anders broke a wa y from Cavataio on the second loop with a low class score of 10. Once again, Anders fell victim to the sixth secti on, giv ing awa y maximum points. Cavataio also five d sec tio n six and ended th e lo op with a who pping 22 po ints, but Thomson, meanwhile, was ab le to prance thro ug h the tr icky section with only a sing le dab. The Gas Gas jT35 rid er accumu Jated o n ly 12 po in ts, a n d took over second-place , . A tall, lanky rider, Anders' strength lies in his ability to tum in cons isten t scores. Anders ' Ll-point final loop secured his second-consecutive win, while Thomson was close behind with a 13-point loop. Anders' marg in of victory ove r Thomso n was eigh t poin ts, 32-40. Cavataio was third with SO, Observed Tria ls Products' jared Malmquis t was the only Expert class ride r on hand a t the event, but that d idn 't stop him from giving each section his very best . The de fending American Trials Association Champion was impressiv e as he scored 16 cleans and gave up only 27 points while negotiating the most difficult sections of the da y. Results NOV A: 1.
