JAN. 2ll Wi th rid er-cou nt down due to the An ah eim Supercro ss, the little guys found the mselves once again in the spoUight during the USA Arenacross a t Speedway USA, with so me of the best, a nd most co nt rovers ial, rid in g coming from th e 80c c d iv isi on where Michael H u ll emerged with the SOcc Beginner win. Chris Hunsinger was the sole Novice and he easily won all th ree motos ove ra ll. bu t behind h im were eig ht Beginn er rid ers fighting it ou t for second overall and class honors. After a pile up caused a resta rt in the first mot o, Hu nsinger took the overall lead followed by Hull and Bran don Flippin. As H unsinger p ulled awa y, Hull and Flippin sta yed close together and put an a good show while most of their competitors were find ing the mud rather slippery . On the final lap. Hull and Flippin went ove r the big d ouble ju mp s side by side when Flippi n sudd enly lost it and wen t down. As Rippin fell he appa rently bu mp ed Hull. who also went down on the secon d jump. H ull didn 't seem to think mu ch of Flipp in's maneuver and he ran back up the hill and pushed Aippin over. who was just getting himself an d his bike back up . Hull earned the le-ers of the crowd an d a lecture from the referee (who happened to be his f? the~). In the end. Jeff Wylie puttered by the f1ghhng duo to sco re the Beginner class w in with Hull and Flippin eventually being credited with fifth and sixth. respectively. In mo to two, all the fights remained on the track and a good race it was . Behind Hunsinger, Rod Worden led Flip pi n. Hu ll a nd Brandon Johnson in the early going bu t was then passed by Flipp in. wh o led for a while. Flipp in then lost it in the mud and went down. He was oka y bu t dropped well behind and would not ma ke moto three . Th is p ut Word en back in front bu t Hull soon ca ugh t and passed him, hold ing on to finish second overall and first Beginner. Hull wa s again the first Beginn er in mot o three after winning a battle with Shane Fox, and despite his first-mote tro ubles. Hull's two wins were e no ugh to snatch the Beginn er class win with Fox ending up second . Jim McEntee p ut in some outstan ding rides on a bo x-stock Suzuki TM400 Cyclone and scored two class wins during ro un d thr ee of the AHRMA Cal-Zona Series at Glen Helen Raceway. . On the tr ack, the onl y thing McEn tee lost w as hi s s ilence r. as he tot ally do mina ted the SOOcc Spo rtsman and 30+ Novi ce classes via fou r mo to wins. For his efforts, McEntee has b een moved up to th e Intermediate ran ks fo r the remainder of the series. Ed Ott was also bu mped up to Intermediate after his co nvincing sweep of the 50+ Novice class aboard a Yamaha MX36O. Ott recen tly celebrated his 60th birthday. After close contests in all classes, the Arizona and California cha llenge tea ms fini she d in a dead heat for the second straight round, leaving Arizona w ith an eight-po int lead over California - gained at the opening round of the series - in the qu es t fo r the Ca l-Zona C u p. Severa l hot Southern California vinta ge racers are expected to make the trek to Thrasher land near Phoen ix for the final round of the series on February 19, an d they aim to wres tle the title away.
