The event mark ed the first time Schmid t had ever competed on the ice, an d he certainly d isplayed his versati lity by d efeati ng some of Minnesota's finest ice racers. . The late-brak ing Schmidt then slid to the inside of Zi tu r to mak e the pass and tuml.-d up the wick. On the seco nd lap , Deal slipped past Zitur a lso but th ere was no ca tch ing Schm id t. Th e on ly inciden t of the race ca me on lap four when Erick son cras hed ou t of co ntention while run ning in fifth. Schmi d t went on to score the win wit h Deal J d istant second . Larson mad e a la5tlap move past Zitu r to earn third place. The 250cc Pro class saw Schm id t and Darrin Chelin go toe-to-toe in a close battle that went the distance. The duo traded the lead on seve ra l occas ions, bu t Schmi d t made the winn ing pa ss on the penultimate lap to pick up his seco nd victory of the afte rnoo n. Mark Dea l an d Dav e Jend ro won the two Of'<'n B heat races. The six-lap final was a different story, how ever, as John Larson tu rne d the tablt. s an d led the main eve nt uncontested from sta rt to finish scoring th e upse t. Gad dis ' wors t finish was a seco n d pl a ce to Tea m Su z uki Off Road ' s G u y Cooper in Frida y night' s 250cc main. But with th e fab led fo rmer U.s. GP t ra ck receiving a recor d amou nt of rainfall, cond itiollS resem bled that of a mud bog. and played rig,t in to Truhn's ha nds as he stormed to the Expcrt class win. As the flag fell for th e first Expe rt mot o )f th e d ay, Duane Q uay le sho t to the fro nt of the pack, with Tru hn in ho t pu rsuit. By the end of the seco nd lap, Quayle and Truhn had extended the ir le ad ove r the rest of th e pack w ith Dol n Townsen d a dis tant third .
