In the SOcc class, Nelson actually had a little co mpe titi on as he sha re d the Novice ra nki ng with Chris H uns inger an d Chris Panek. In the first mota , Ne lson and Hunsi nge r went a t it, with Nelson keeping Hu ns inger at ba y, his job being mad e eas ier when Hu nsin ger was ba lked b y a slower bike . Nelson ope ned up a lead and took the mo to wi n. In the next mo to, however, the Nelso n express was nearl y derailed as he go t off the line behind Hunsinger an d Panek. Ne lson made a banzai charge that saw him catch Panek a t the double jum ps only to collide with Panek in a midair cras h that brough t out the red flag. Both kids got back to their feet and ma de the race restart. This time Nelso n got the jump and was back in first place, but he took a comer too tightly and ende d up caught in a hay bale. By the time Nelso n got unstuc k and movin g ag ain he had drop ped to fourth p lace beh ind Hunsinger, Panek and Michael Hu ll, but Ne lson put his wrist into it a nd soo n ree led in Hu ll an d Pane k to salvage second place. Making no mistakes in the final mo ta, Nelso n took the class win over Hu nsin ger and Panek, with Hull taking all three Beginner division w ins - and fourth overa ll - to cop the class plaqu e. Joe Crouch started things off with the OTHG Expert class first-mota holesh ot. Cro uch quickly came un de r fire from Hean, who wa s being pressured by David Fajardo and Yarn ell. Hean stayed withi n striking di sta nce for most of the mot a before powering aro und Crouch just after the Kal Ca rd tow er jump . Yarnell pushed Crouch back to third a few tu rns later an d set out after Hean. Hean an d Yarne ll ended up going at it a ll the wa y to the chec ke red flag, with Hean keep ing his CRSOO ahea d by a few feet for a hard-fought win. Cro uch held off a great last-lap cha rge from John Han de lin to finish th ird . It wa s di scovered af ter th e first mota th a t Yarnell had failed to we ar the req uired OrnG jersey a nd wa s dock ed a lap for the oversight, dro pp ing him to 12th place. Cortland Brown led Crouch, Heart, Handelin and Yarne ll as mota two got underway. By the second lap, the race became a three-rider ba ttle for the le a d with Cro uch lead in g Hea rt a nd Yarne ll. Hean took control at the mid way po int with Yarn ell looki ng for a p lace to pa ss. With just ove r a lap rema ining, Yarn ell shot pas t Hean and qu ickly p u lled away for the seco nd -mo ta wi n . He an fen d ed off a last-lap assau lt b y Crouch to fin ish in second and captu re the ove rall honors . Fajardo worked up throug h the pack to take fourth and finish th ird overa ll. Yamaha of Cucam onga-backed Ernie Kopasz turned two ho leshot s into ru naway victo ries . John Rizzo looked to have the runner-up position in the firs t mo ta sewn up un til a battl e for third be tween Tim Rash an d Ma rty Westerman caugh t h im on th e fina l circuit. Rash sli p pe d past to take second with Rizzo holding off Westerman at the nag. While Kopasz cruise d out front with a hu ge lead in mota two, Rash and Westerman repeated their mo to-Iong duel for second place with Rash once aga in preva iling.
