Flanders and Ow en fought for the lead with
Owe n ge tting the up per h a nd just pas t th e
halfway po int. How ell a ppeared to be the fastest
rider in the rnoto, coming from a last -place start
to press ure Flande rs for secon d towa rd the end
of the race. Howell ou tjumped Fland er s at the

Ow en a few turns later to grab the lead wher e
he wo uld s tay un t il t he fi n ish. Owe n Cam e

for the ove rall. Even though Watan abe faded to
finish sixth, he still ea rned third overa ll behi nd
the 4-1 finishes of How ell.

The event mark ed the first time Schmid t had
ever competed on the ice, an d he certainly d isplayed his versati lity by d efeati ng some of Minnesota's finest ice racers.

" I' ve been pra ct icin g for th e la st couple
weeks," Sch m idt said. "It's a lot of fun , and I
hope to be ab le to come out and race with my
frie nd s ag ain sometime."
The Vet class saw Dan Zitu r out front a t the
start of the m ai n event w hite le a d in g Mark
Deal, Jo h n Larso n , Sch mi dt , Joe Tromburg,
Rocky Erickson and the rest of the pack into the
first tu r n of the scra m b le s -ty p e race tra ck .
Schmidt made quick work of Larson and Deal
in th e fir st of th e two h a ir p in sect io ns and
ca ug h t Zit u r a t th e end o f th e lo n g b a ck
st raig ht. The late-brak ing Schmidt then slid to
the inside of Zi tu r to mak e the pass and tuml.-d
up the wick.
On the seco nd lap , Deal slipped past Zitur
a lso but th ere was no ca tch ing Schm id t. Th e
on ly inciden t of the race ca me on lap four when
Erick son cras hed ou t of co ntention while run ning in fifth. Schmi d t went on to score the win
wit h Deal J d istant second . Larson mad e a la5tlap move past Zitu r to earn third place. The 250cc Pro class saw Schm id t and Darrin
Chelin go toe-to-toe in a close battle that went
the distance. The duo traded the lead on seve ra l
occas ions, bu t Schmi d t made the winn ing pa ss
on the penultimate lap to pick up his seco nd victory of the afte rnoo n.

Of'<'n B heat races. The six-lap final was a different story, how ever, as John Larson tu rne d the
tablt. s an d led the main eve nt uncontested from
sta rt to finish scoring th e upse t. Dea l fin ishe d
seco nd with Jeff Berg. Jendro, and Joe Tro mburg
roun ding ou t the top five pos itions.

in to Truhn's ha nds as he stormed to the Expcrt
class win.
As the flag fell for th e first Expe rt mot o )f
th e d ay, Duane Q uay le sho t to the fro nt of the
pack, with Tru hn in ho t pu rsuit. By the end of
the seco nd lap, Quayle and Truhn had extended
the ir le ad ove r the rest of th e pack w ith Dol n
Townsen d a dis tant third . By lap thrt.>e Quay le
and Tr u hn wer e locked in a fierce battlc, with
