McGrath, Pingree pour it on at Perris Motocross By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA.OCT.29 "I raced as a 125 Novice here at Perris in 1987,and it's great coming back to where it all started," said overall winn er Jeremy McGrath after a doublemoto sweep of the 250cc Pro class during the GA Dealer Series warm-up event at Perris Raceway. Fresh off his runner-up finish at the Fukuoka Supercross in Japan, McGrath raced uncontested during both 250cc Pro motos and rode with an elegance second to none. McGrath led all 24 laps during the two moto s and lapped most of the Pros with the exception of Ryan Hughes and Travis Preston. "I go t bea t in Japan last week," McG rat h said. " I jus t need to train and ride a little harder for the next couple of months." Ryan Hughes and Rookie Pro Travis Preston battl ed ea rly in both motos for seco nd place. "Those gu ys hav e reall y good lines: Preston said. "My end urance just wasn't good eno ugh to go that fast for that long." Thou gh Preston stayed on the same lap as both McGrath and Hughes, he did lose visual contact with both riders after the halfway point in both motes. In th e end, it was the I-800-COLLECT Hond a of McGrath scoring the hand s-down runaway victories over Hughes and Preston. David Pingree showed off his new Kawasa ki Pro Circuit/Split Fire Spark Plugs ride and went home the overall winner of the 125cc Pro class after topping new facto ry Suzu ki rid er Crai g Decker. The first moto saw Decker and Pingree collide at the start, forcing both riders to work back from last and next to last , respecti vely. By the end of the race, Decker moved past the entire field for the win with Pingree a short distance behind in second, and Steve Andrich third . The seco nd mo to saw Pingree nail the hole shot while Decker got away third be hind Andrich. Decker worked on Andrich for just over three laps Pingree opened a comfortable lead. Once Decker moved past Andrich for second , he caught Pingree in just over three laps. The two rider s battled it out for the remaining laps with Pingree prevailing in the end for the moto and overall victory, topp ing Decker, Andrich and rookies Ty Kady and E.J. Leghorn GRIZZLY R.AT.CA, OCT.30 After several near misses, Marty Walden fough t thro ugh the dus t and won his fus t AMA District 36 event of the year at the Polka Dots Motorcycle Club's 4ger Enduro in the Sierra foothills near Placerville, California . After an easy start, a 26-mph average had riders hard on the gas, but the first check only served to do the initial skimming of the cream , a s the che ck wa s zeroed by Wald en, Da ve Wood , Don Knapp, Scott Meyer and Ed d ie Diaz. Encountering problems to the first check were last year 's 4ger Enduro winner Jason Edie, District 36 points leader Matthew Wallace, and current District Champion Josh Chandler, who all put themselves into a hole by drop ping a point. Check two was an easy zero for most riders, and a long section of 24 mp h into the first tiebreaker at check three proceeded to take the first points of the da y from the leaders. Wallace was the fastest to check three with a 1:16, followed by the 1:27 of Mey er , 1:31 for Diaz, 1:32 for Walden , 1:45 for Knapp and 1:46 for Wood. Edie and Chandler continued to battle problems, with both riders dropping two po ints at check three. Over-aggressive riding by Meyer and Diaz then caused both riders to bum check four, removing them from the early lead. With Walden, Wood an d Knapp all sharing a score of one aft er th e firs t loop , and Wallace w ith a two , it was clea r that a stro ng second loop with a good tie-breaker score would be necess ary to tak e th e d ay's overa ll vic tory . The other major test of the day occurred betw een checks five and six, where the Edie's 1:27 was the fast time throu gh the woods. Wallace continued his strong showin g at the tie-breakers, with his 1:40being next quickest, followed by the 1:42 of Diaz, 1:45 for Meyer and 1:54for Chandler. However, both Wa ld en an d Wood al so ducked under the two-point curta in, with a 1:55 and 1:50, respecti vely, and denied Wallace the point he ne ed ed ba ck. Knapp, ridin g on the same minute as Meyer, encountered probl ems fighting through Meyer' s dust, and d ropped two poin ts. One more easy check finished the scoring checks of the enduro, with Walden hangin g on for a narrow nine-second margin over Wood for the overall victory. Wallace and Knapp tied with three points, with Wallace taking third on tiebr eakers. Their bum at check four dropped Meyer and Diaz to fifth and sixth, respectively. Results A SPTS MN (0/ A): 1. Making their way in a fast freight-train style, Baker held Roth , Oehlhof, Gayl ord and Cuff com ing throu gh th e g ras s swi tchback s before the finish line. Cuff showed his grass rocing roots by overtaking Gaylord coming for the finish-line comer. Cuff fo und his way into the lead go ing through the natural-terra in whoop section. That was all the viewing the competition would see of Cuff, who took his Mark Hammond / AMS Kawasaki of England /Ohlins-supported KX to the first-moto win. Baker took second, Oehlhof held off Roth for third and Charles Coon was fifth. The second mo to was the best moto of the day, with the holeshot going to Coon. Baker was outstanding in the app le orchard section getting past Aldrich , Gaylord and Coon for the lead. Meanwhile, Cuff had a charge going himself, passing two riders at once and getting into the top five by the completion of the first lap. Things really got wild by the fifth lap with Cuff going for Roth in the finish-line switchbacks, taking a wide outs ide line trying and to sweep inside to overtake Roth.
