Buehl, on a n FoltS-backed Suzuki, had to
overcome Josh Steel and James Eickel at round
five of the 1994 Budweiser Supercross Series.
Buehl' s startin g technique was perfect as he
led the field at the start of the first 12Scc Pro
moto. Chuck Reed ran in second ahead of J.D.
Collins, James Eickel and Josh Steel, who was on
a borrowed Honda and really on the gas. After
tak ing a couple of laps to outrun Eickel, Steel
blasted by Collins and wen t after Reed . With the
large crowd cheering him on, Steel ouljumped
Reed in the infield whoop section to take over
second. Steel continued to hammer hi s way
around the track trying to catch Buehl. Though
he was able to close on Buehl, Jeromy took the
checkered flag . Pro C ircuit-backed Eickel
slip ped by Collins as the moto wound down,
and finished fourth behind Reed .
Between motos , Eickel,who leads the Summer
Series points standings, explained his problem.
" My p ipe is crushed an d my bike is way
down on power," Eickel said . "I can't even jump
the tripl es."
Eickel had to get a good start to run with
Buehl, Steel and Reed , and when the 125cc A
class hit the fIrst tum in moto two, Eickelled the
fIeld, with Shane Lawson and Buehl - who are
both recovering from serious knee in juries •
chasing him.
Buehl tried to set up Collins while keeping
an eye on Steel. Both rid ers flew by Collins in
the infi eld whoops and the battle for second
pushed them closer to Eickel. Reed was really on
the move and picked off riders on his way to the
fron t.
Buehl finall y caught Eickel in the back section, and he ouljumped Eickel in the double
jumps. Eickel tried to block-pass Buehl in the big
bowl tum, but Buehl didn't flinch and kept the
lead. For the last three lap s, Steel hammered
around the course, but Buehl held on to take the
win. Eickel and Collins took third and fourth,
respectively, ahead of Reed , who slipped past
Lawson on the last lap.

Team Suzuki's 125cc ace Damon Huffman posted a four-moto sweep of both 125 and 2SOcc Pro
classes during the fina l round of the GFI Fall
Series at the all-new Quail Can yon OHV Park in
Gorman, California.
The Qua il Canyon OHV Par k was officially
reopened to racers after GFI promoter Goat
Breker con vin ced park offi cials that the race
track ne eded another chance. The track was
closed some years ago when the former track
operators disobe yed park rul es ca u sin g
immense damage to the surrounding landscape.
Huffman, wh o began his racing career at the
Hungry Valley race course, remembered the fo....
mer track.
"I used to race 60cc bikes here," Huffman
said. "This track is really good. It's fast, and the
turns have a lot of different lines."
Huffman did n 't have to experim ent with too
many lines in the firs t 125cc Pr o race after
pulling the holeshot aboard a non -factory Suzuki. Huffman raced with Vet World ChampDoug
Dubach during the fir st half of the moto.
Dubach, who recently turned 31 yea rs old,
seemed unaffected by his age. In fact, one might
wonder if he was a recent visitor to the fountain
of youth by the way he was riding his YZ125.
"This is all for fun now," Dubach said. "I am
not training as much, but I still ride my mounta in bi ke an d do testing with Yamaha. But I

Huffman crossed the finish line in the first
moto w ith a four·sec ond lead over Dubach,
C reg Schnell and Pro rooki e Shaun Perelio.
Perolio pulled the hol eshot in th e second
l 25cc Pro moto but wa s pa ssed by his O'Neal
teammate Dubach before the end of the first lap .
Perolio blocked Huffman for the next half a lap
while Dubach tried to pull away . But Huffman
swooped by Perelio just past the ha lfway point
and left. Dubach behind on his way to the eventua l win. Dubach once again scored the runnerup spo t. Schnell worked p ast Perolio just after
the halfw ay po int for third, whi le Donal d Upton
rounded out the top five.
