Webster, Buckley best Woodland Vintage Motocross By Clay Ught WOODLAND, WA.OCT.22 H usqva rna rider Keith Webster and Yamahamoun ted Jesse Buck le y we re among the big winners at the Vintage Dirt-sanctioned vintage motocross a t Woodland Motocross Park, which drew a large contingent of riders from Wash· ington. Oregon and Canada for the se ries opener. Webs ter rode impressively en route to wins in the 30+ a n d Open Expert classes . In both eve nts, Webster went relatively u nchallenged. Suzuki-mounted Bryan Murphy led pa rt of the first Open moto, fini shing second to Webster, and chased Webs ter to the finis h in moto two. Webster, the lone Expert , picked up the ove rall, whi le Murphy won the Amateur portion ahead of Mike Ad ler and Don Kauffman. In the 30+ class, which also ran combined in Expert/ Amateur configuratio n, Webster, riding the Revord Racing /Redline Oil-backed Husky, ha d tough er competit ion, as Rickman rid ers John Smith and Bill Brown cha sed him to the flag in moto one. Smith hounded Webster again in mota two before fini shing second . Brown again posted third, good for the Amateur win ahead of Bultaco rider Monte Bloemke and Adler. It wa s a surp rise wh en Buckley, like Web-ster, showed up to ride locally, rather than contesting the Hollister Vintage MX National. Buckley's 1974 Yamaha 2SO was more than a match for the competition that wished he'd gone south af te r witnessing his 1-1 per formances . Sm ith hounded Buckl ey, but wa s again relegated to second ov erall. Takin g the top Ama te ur spo t was Bloemke, who beat mote-one winner Steve Kauffman, while Canadian Dean Newton' and O reg on 's Jeff Gleason battled fo r th ird, which wen t to Newton. Honda-mounted LaFaye McCarver ac ed both 125cc motos, beating a surprising Rich Sipp, Jr. - a l(}.year-old local 80cc speedster - and Steve Kauffman, wh o battled to the finish . SMmI, AR, OCT. 21·23 Roy Schellenberger dom ina ted the actio n in the 125 an d 250cc Expe rt classes during the GNC Ou tlaw Indoor Nationals at Harper Stadium. In the Grand Fina le on Friday night, Brando n Lacey came ou t of the chu te cha rging and le d the ra ce fo r th e fi rs t 18 laps . Dennis Hawthorne kept right behind Lacey, hoping to over take him, followed by Tre y Ow en s, who had wo n his heat race . Sche llenberge r was in fourth pla ce, but passed Owens on the seventh lap only to be pa ssed by Ow ens ag ain on the 10th lap . Schellenberger was determined to get to the front , ",king Owens aga in on the 12th lap a n d then selling h is sig h ts on th e le a de r Haw tho rne. OCT. 9 Former AMA 2SO and 500cc National MX Champion Kent Howerton was the top d og durin g round one of the Tucker-Rocky / Acerbis/Dunlop / Answer / Sidi 1995 Texas Championship Hare Scramble Series at Zars Ranch, site of the firs t ro u nd of the 1992 AMA National Hare Scramble Series. The Pro cla ss b lasted off in unison, with Steve Ca rdwell an d Clifford Goertz falling in beh ind How erton, who appeared to be almost late enou gh to be absent at the start . Howerton finally managed to get h is jumbo fou r-s troke fired and inunediately ran down the field, building a la rge lead a t the end of the first la p and never bein g serious ly challenged. Ca rdwell worked his wa y through the field into second, but a last-lap crash put him over the bars, and he lost two places while recovering . The morning's support race was highli gh ted by the Open C race. The top five finishers we re on the same minute. First and second. place were sp read by fo u r seconds. Open C rid er Craig Richardson sco red the su ppo rt race overaU vic· tory . Lorena Hancoc k scored a decisive victory over Daniell e Lindemann, who was caught off guard sorting out a new bike. Both A d isp lacement classes put on a show. Bert Reynolds, !<1st year's series Overall A winner, got top A hon ors, bes ting second in his class by six minu tes. The en tire claSs was alive with Gary Windham getting a poo r start and dicing w ith Todd Ta rver; the Brad shaw brothe rs and Sha wn O 'lea ry before breaking ou t to a tw omin ute lead over third -place Tarver. The 200cc A class was a romp, w ith future mo tocross supersta r Charlie Bogart try in g his first hare scramble and proving to all comers he w as ove rall mat eria l. Hess assumed the lead on the second lap after George Greer had taken it for a short time . Hungry for a chance to catch up wa s Ste ve Arthur, who was not on the line by the time the race started and had mo re tha n 45 seco nds to make up. The ba ttl e between Hess a nd Greer made some of the crowd watching think back to 1989 when these two battl ed for the 125cc class. Hess kept the lead an d took the w in. followed by Gree r and Arth u r. The 2SO/5OOcc A class wa s very in teresti ng to watch. Tommy Handy got the ho lesho t, followed by Mar k Allman and Timmy Mitchell. By the end of the second lap, Allma n ha d taken the lead, followed by Mitchell and Handy. A pass in the woods gave Mitchell the lead , but a hungry A1lman kep t dose to him. Ha ndy fell back and took fifth place after Andrew Williams and Scotty Williams sneaked up on him and loo k third and fourth place, respectively. In the Senio r class, Rob ert Cox tooK th e holeshot and kept the lead to the flag, but Stan Norris mad e a good show of it af te r runn ing four th in to the w oods , followe d b y Bob Williams. By the end ~f the second lap , Norris had pulled up to seco nd p lace, with Williams trailing at one of the checkpoints in the woods. Williams made a move on Norris and took the lea d , but it wa s sho rt- live d , and Norris had mad e the pass back and mov ed up to ",""ond place.
