Skaggs gets green at
Birch Creek Motocross
By Jay and S haro n Ha user
DANVIU.E. vA, OCT. 15
Team Green's Robbie Skaggs turned out to win
the most green as he took the 250cc A class win
to collect the biggest part of the $1000 purse in
the AMA Fall C lassic Ama teur day at Birch
Creek Motorspo rts.

the ov era ll hon ors for the d ay, the victory d id
not come easy, thanks to his Tea m Green coun terpart Richie Horton and local ace Kevin Walker. Skaggs put his Kawasaki to the front of the
field to take the openin g-mote wins in each
c~ss, but actually took the overall by being consisten t.
Whe n the gate dropped for the first 250cc A
class , it was Walker roosting to the front of the
pack. Walker's holeshot was quickly cut short as
a q uick bob ble in the thick outer mud of tum
two sucked him in just long enough to a llow
Skaggs to squeak past for the lead . Rob
McWhorter worked his big CRSOO into third
b~d.Walker as the pack worked into lap one
WIth TIlden Styron and Mike Eastwood filling
the top five .
Walker bumped up the gas and reassumed
th~ lead by the .end of lap one . But with the laps
wmdmg down In moto one, Skaggs wicked it up
and put some heavy pr essure on Walker, and
kept it on u ntil Walker cracked, and Skaggs
went past for the win.
Walker again blasted out to a big lead in
250cc A mota two, only this time it was Horton
hot on his case, with Skaggs closely tucked into
third.
The lead trio quickly began to pull away
from the fIeld and stretched a comfortable distance on Eastwood and the rest of the pack by
lap two, when the three-way battle turned into a
two-way duel of death. Walker fell out of contention on lap two and left the battle for the win
to Horton and Skaggs .
Horton fought off every pass attempt that
Skaggs could throw at him to hol d on for the
win, but it was no t enough. Horton needed the
cushion of Walker between himself and Skaggs
for a sho t at the overall, but with Walker's trouble went Horton's ove rall . Skaggs secured the
seco nd position in mo ta two which resulted in a
better ove rall score and the victory ove r Horton.
