Slabaugh sharp at Steel City Motocross By J ulie Kra mer DELMONT PA,OCT. 9 , Da le Slabaugh overa lled th e 250cc C class in fifth-roun d action of the Distri ct 5 Pennsylvani a Sta te Champion ship series a t Steel City Raceway. In the first mc to, the Rex Brow n was the first ou t of the ga te, bu t he wa sn 't abl e to hold the position for long. Gettin g a round him on th e first d ownhill were Tho ma s Winders, Charles Ellis and Slaba ugh, who began to work his way up, pas sing bo th Ellis and Wind ers on the second lap . On the fifth lap, Ellis wa s able to work h is wa y into second on the d ownhill afte r the woods section. After the white flag, Winders cras hed at the top of the uphill doubles, allowing Chris Knaus to move into the th ird pos ition . Winders wa s able to hold on to fourth for the checkered flag, followed by Jaso n Stoba t. In moto two, Slabaugh got the ho leshot, follow ed by David Burns and Ellis. Within half a lap, Burns lost five positions through the tough whoop section, and EJ1is wa s able to move into second, where he stayed for the rest of the moto . Two Ka wa sa kis fo llowed Ellis, Knaus was in th ird again, as in moto one, and he wa s being hotly pursued by Micha el Bowersox throug h the pro section. Bower sox made the pa ss bu t soon lost his third -pl ace position to Geo rge Kile y, who soon a fter stalled at the top of the hill and Bowersox rega ined fourth. Silverole soars at Batavia MX By Melissa Threadgill B ATAVIA, NY, SEI'T. 25 Bill Silverole put together a I -I performance to come away with the overall win in the 201-Qpen Expert class at the Batavia MX track. In the first m oto, Joe Ell in g to n too k th e holeshot, followed by Scott Gh id u, Peter MalYi and Silverole. By the second stra ightaway, Silverol e was second, having passed Ma lyj a nd Ghid u. With Silve role hot on his tail"Ellington qu ickene d the pace. O n th e se ries of three jum ps, Ellington took th em double-single, but Silvero le launched his bike and made the obstacles into a triple. The m ove ga ve Silver ole an edge over Elling ton, a nd he went on to pass him a few seconds later. While Silverole opened up a lead, G hid u worked on pa ssing Ellin gton . He caught Ellington but crashed . and fell back into fourth. Meanwhile, Malyj passed Ellington and set his sights o·n Silverole. Although Silverole had a 20-second lead, MalYi closed the gap down to just under four second s. While Silverole did his best to ho ld up against th e cha rg e of Ma lyj, Ghi du managed to pass Ellington . In th e end, Silverole took th e win, followed b y Ma lyj, Ghid u, and Ellingt on . In th e seco nd moto, Ellington again got the hol esh ot , followed by Silverole , Ben Trask, and Ed VanBallyGooen. Ma lYi, with a bad start, was in sixth. Ellington wiped out and dropped back into fourth. Silverole took the lead, followed by Trask a nd Van BallyGooen . Ma lYi was in fifth · while Ellington closed in on VanBallyGooen and passed him. But Van BallyGooe n passed Ellington righ t back before Ellingto n was ab le to main-
