Fay fabulous at Aztec MX By Mike Arnold AZTfC, NM, OCT. 9 McGrath, Beier split Carlsbad MX wins Though he was on ly o n hand to t ra i n , Jeremy McGrath domina ted the fI rst Pro c lass mota at the Racing Enterpr lsespromoted Carlsbad Raceway MX. By Seymour Bettys Scott Rousseau. Hain earned third overall v ia his 4-3 moto fini shes, while Rousseau rounded up fourth -place honors, despite a horrendous second-mote a crash on the uphill. CARLSBAD,CA, OCT 15 wo-time Supercross Champion Jeremy McGrath pa id a visit to Racing Enterprises' Saturday MX, held at Carlsbad Raceway. Though the Team Honda /1-800-COLLECT rider d idn't compete in both motes, he did proceed to "school " the rest of the Pro class competition with a runaway victory in the opening 2Q-minute-plus-two-lap moto. "I' m just here to have some fun and ge t in some training," said McGrath, who competed aboard one of his practice bikes. "We have the weekend off, and Jeff Surwall talked me into coming out to play." When the ga te dropped at the start of the combined Pro moto, Vet Pro Mike Beie r ri p ped off the li ne a board his Yamaha YZ250and nabbed the holeshot ahead of a surprised McGrath, 250cc Pro Steve Drew, and Vet Pros Willy Musgrave and Jeff Surw all. "Mike ripped me off the sta rt," laughed McGrath. "I started way to the ou tside where the starting area was dirt. I don't dig concrete starting pads." McGrath wasted little time and displaced Beier within the first four tu rns. Once out front, McGrath pulled well clear of the field , lapping most of his competition. Beier maintained second, winning the Vet Pro class bu t finishing over a minute behind McGrath. Drew came to life late in the moto to finish third overall and first 250, while Musgrave overcame a few terrible laps ear ly in the moto to work up to fourth overall and second Vet Pro . Surwall was third some distance back, but drew even greater cheers from the crowd than McGrath himself. Moto two was not as exciting as the first, as McGrath packed up and headed further south to spectate at the Del Mar Mile. Beier holeshot the second mo to and led start to finish, while Drew and Musgr ave battled over second. In the end, it was Drew who emerged second, and first on the 250cc Pro class. Honda rider Jeremy Bull emerged the victor in the hotly contested 125cc Begin ner class after trad ing mo to wins with Kawasaki Big Wheel Bo-mounted Becky Kukla. Kukla topped the opening moto, but it was Bull who emerged the victor in the tie-brea king seco nd ra ce.
