Southworth also tried a lastdi tch effort to pass Harris in some nasty w hoops just before the finish, bu t stalled his bike 30 feet from the checkers to go from finishing fourth to fmishing eighth. Michels'manages Bridgehampton Motocross win By Jim and Carolyn Simpson 8RIDGEHAMPTON, NY, sm.24 Mike Michels won the 250cc Pro Expert class when The Long Island Sports Committee kicked off its fall season a t the Bridgehampton MX facility. John Laurine, Mik e Bilardello and Michels bl ast ed around the firs t tu m to start th e first 250cc Pro Expert moto. Bilardello sailed over the Hidden Vailey tabletop as the lead er. Laurine trailed in second un til Michels railed the outside to secure second place as they jumped down the Parach ute jump. Michels stayed on the gas and then outjumped Bilardel lo for the lead . Michels se t the pace as La uri ne and Bila rd ello beca me en tangled in a side-by-si de battle for secon d . The pair swa pped p osi lion s until Bila rdello th ro t tl ed away to chase d own the leader Michels. Bila rdello caught a nd ju m ped ahead o f M iche ls to n ail d own th e lead. Laurine th en tw is ted the wick to pass Michel s for second . Ho nda -mounted Lau rine ma de a bid for first b ut Bilardello held on to take the moto win. Laurine secu red second as Michels took third for the first moto. Danny O'Keefe, racing his first time as a Pro Expert, grabbed the holeshot to start mo lo two. Michels moved up from second to take the lead in the back woods. While ch asin g in thi rd , Bilardello crashed hard in the woods, endi ng his b id fo r an other moto win . Wh en the flag dropped, Billy Burgess grabbed the holes hot a n d ro ared into th e lead with LaPlant n ipping a t his he el s . As Burgess strugg led to ge t his Kawasaki start ed again, Lapla nt gassed it into the lead, grabb ing the checkered flag and the huge trophy that goes with the win. By the time the 250cc Amateurs lined up for their race the gen tle rain had turned the sticky tr ack in to a g rea sy qua gmi re. When th e flag d ropped, Balkcum grabbed the holeshot and set th e bl istering pace. Tarwater, Tripp tame LACR MX By Greg Robert son PALMDALE, CA, sm 24 Su zuki pilot Kevin Tarwater used a 2~1 sco re, whi le Ed Tripp walked away with a perfect 1-1 record to top the 12Sec Novice and Vet Novic e classes, repectively, during the Californi a Racing Club 's Answer Products Grab Bag Series fmale at Los Angeles County Raceway. [n th e firs t 125cc Novice mo ta, Tarwate r gated a t the head of the pack, but Sam Garroutle sho t past an d into the lead by the end of lap one. Michael Rowland contro lled third pla ce until a n o ff-trac k excu rs ion let Ken y Terraccia n o tak e over the position. Tarwate r went down on lap three , adv ancing Terracciano into seco nd place. Two la ps later, Terracciano took a dive in the sa nd to give Ta rw at er his runner· up position back. Ga rrou tle gree ted the checkers first, ahead of Tarwate r, Rowland and Terracciano in fourth. Rowland led the first two laps of mot a two before Te rracciano reeled him in for the pass. Tarwa ter was working up from a poo r sta rt to take over second place at the halfway point. Terracciano appea red to ha ve the seco nd -mo te win in the bag until he mistook the white flag for the chec kered flag an d pulled off the track a lap ea rly. Terracciano quickly rea lized his mistak e and ree n te red th e tr ack, but Ta rwater h ad al rea dy gone by an d had too m uch of a lead. Ta rwate r went home the ove rall winn er. Terra cciano still picked up a second- place trop hy with 4-2 finishes. Huge leads we re the orde r of th e d ay for Tripp in bo th Vet Novice mo tos. Tripp had his Nationwide Cycle / Answer Products-backed CR250 out fron t from th e d rop of th e ga te in bo th races to pull away uncon tested. John Stich worked up th rou gh the field in bo th motos to capture second ove ra ll with a 3-2 score.
