Brinkwart steps up at Bath Trial By Don Allis ~ 0\ ~ 0\" ~ I-< QJ B o 36 B ATH, NY, SEPT. 25 Geo rge Brinkwart ca me alive at Round 12 of the AMA District 4 Trials Series at Bath, New York, winning the Expert class over Mike Komer by a score of 47 poi n ts to 69 po ints. Brinkwart led .after the first loop an d never looked back. Section eight was Brinkwart's best secti on for the da y. The section was slippery, rocky a nd tigh t, and it all we nt uphill. Brinkwart was very good at hopp ing his Gas Gas and be ing able to find tractio n. Emm ett Watkins won the Ad vanced Cla ss over Matt Hughson by a score of 56 points to BO po ints . Section seve n featured a hillclimb to start the section before goi ng into a d ownhill and then back up a second hill. It was Watkins' best section for the day . Th e Intermediate Class w in ner was Benn Willamson over Fr ed Wood , 26 p oin ts to 32 points. Section nine was a tigh t section wi th logs and loose soil. Willamso n was clearly the rider to bea t in this section. Senior A Clas s winner was Laverne Bowen wh o d rop ped a total of 16 poin ts over Bob Foringer who d ropped a total of 26 points. The Nov ice Class e njoyed sectio ns that required the m to pay a ttentio n to all o f th e details. The sect ions would change traction from mud dy rocks to dry loose di rt back to mud. Winna cker, who wa nted to break the track recor d he had set earlier in the seaso n (1:36 flat for the U -mile track), powered ou t right behind him and the two d iced for nine laps. ·On the third lap, Winna cker, on his Har reyDav id son / Kawasaki of Mis souri-backed mach ine , pas sed un d ernea th Oldham in tum · five. Two laps later, Oldham got Winna cker on the brakes in tum one. But, on the ninth lap, they we re both hung up by backmarkers frJ tum thr ee, an d Win nacker too k the opportunity to shoot around the outside in four. From that point on, Winn acker domin ated, and he and Oldham were the only racers to get 28 lap s. Old ham said later tha t he d idn't bac k off until the lap and gap boards indica ted he d idn 't have time to catch up . JACKSONVILLE, PA,SEPT. 25 Ch a llenger Raceway w as the loca tion for th e third round of the seven-race District S Pennsylvania State Championship MX Series. Over 300 riders participated in this roun d of the series with 18 classes causin g a long day ; the final moto finished right be fore d arkn ess fell. In 125cc A class action, Davey Yezek was ab le to ride aw ay with the checkered Bag in both motos. Yezek was being pr essured in the first moto by Shan e Slother, who was able to grab the holesh ot in the second moto and give Yezek a little ru n for h is mon ey for th e first few laps. Josh Sweat was able to hold d own the thirdplace pos ition in the first moto while being pu rsued by Jeff Yentze r. In th e se cond mota , Yen tz er was able to make his wa y in to the third position" to tak e third overall, followed by Sweat and Michael Lauster . The mo st consis tent rider in the class has to be Slother, who has p laced within the top three in every roun d of the series. Yezek also took the overall win in the 250cc A class in his first race in the series. Overa ll w ins seem to fa ll in to the lap of Action Kawasaki /Suzuki rider Gene Stull, who again took victories in bo th the 85cc (7-11) class and the 65cc class, continuing his streak. Strong competition has also been a factor in the 125 and 250cc B clas ses wi th the Rainbo w Honda-backed Johnny Onisko an d the Cernic 's Suzuki/Honda-backed Ronny Robinson battling for the seco nd -mo te win in th e 125cc class. Robinson won the 125cc B molo , along with his third overa ll in the Schoolboy class, bu t On isko took the overall in the 125cc B class . Hawthorne sharp at Swan MX By Kat Spann mER.TX,SEPT. 25 Team Gr een /Kawasaki City / LCS/ Answersponsored veteran Dennis Haw thorne continued to pr ove to the mot ocross comm unity that he still has it, after winning the 125cc Expert event, and he then ad ded two more victories in the 25+ and 30+ Expert classes. In 125cc Expert class Clint Latham holeshot the first mot o, bu t Billy Akers took over in tum tw o a nd kept the lead into the ne xt lap. Roy Sche lIenbe rger th en passed Ake rs in "Trey 's Wood s" and held on to the num ber-one spo t all th e w a y to th e checke re d flag . Haw tho rne hound ed Aker s for th e nu mber-tw o spo t an d mad e his pa ss stick on lap four to finish second behind Schellenberger. , Moto two saw Hawtho rne ou t fron t by the end of the first lap and holding on to his spo t all the way to the checkered flag. giving him a 2-1 tally for the overall win . Schellenberger finished second overall with his 1-4 finish, whi le Akers grabbed thi rd ove ra ll with a 4-2 tall y. Chad Plumlee and Brad Woolsey finished out the top five. Jonathan Kerr continued his winning methods at Swa n after taking the SOcc class ove rall wi th yet ano ther 1-1 moto tally. The ever-pe rsisten t Brand on Thompson a nd And rew lansing cou ld not slow d own Kerr's winn ing ways, as they finished second and third , respectively, in each moto.
