Rayborn III hotat Sears Point Road Race By Patrick E. Dickinson SONOMA, CA, SEPT. 25 In h is quest for th e numbe r-one plate in th e AFM road racing series , Cal Rayborn 1Il is looking to lake the poin ts lead from Brian Parri ott, if his victory in the Form u la Pacific event at Sears Point International Raceway is any ind ication. From a th ird- place start, Rayborn 1Il moved up to second by tum two , staying on James Randolph's rear tire all the way through seven. On the back side of the track , Rayborn III opened up' his Cycle Gear-backed ZX7, showing its superbike power and building a one-second lead over Randolph's GSXR750, followed by Brian Pa rriott, Dave Stanton and Nick Felli. Rayborn III was running a flawles s race after a slight rear lockup in lorn 11 on lap three , and he rode away from the. remait:'der of the field , leaving the race to Rand olph, Stanton an d .the rest . Parriott was falling to the supe rior power of the lar ger b ikes and cou ld only watch as Felli went by into fourth behind the 1:45 pace set by Rayborn' Ill. . Back in the pack , Ron Chiaratli on his Honda F2 fought for position wi th Warren Dunaway on his Yamaha 250. By the end of the race, Rayborn 111 was d ipp ing into the low 1:4Ss with about a th ree-sec ond lead over Randolph, w hil e Felli was lookin g everywhere for away past the team Valvo line Suzu ki of Sta nton righ t up until the end. Rayborn III took the checkered flag with a whee lie out of lorn 11 and all the way down the d rag stri p. Op ening a lead from the star t in the 650cc Tw ins event, Mi ke Summers p us he d his Tw o Brothers Ha w k into the lead over his ma in competit or Dave Colbert. Colbert took the lead alone after Summers laid his bike down. Colbert now had to deal with Brad Nevens and Dan Reeser as the three battled until Colbert slowly opened up a lead an d got some roo m to breathe. Nevens rode a super-smooth race with Reeser just waiting for anywhere to pass. Heading into lapped traffic, Nevens had no time to look for Colbert, as Reeser closed up only to fall back slightly in the stra ights. Into lorn 11 on the last lap, Reeser attacked the line, pulling past Nevens for second place behind winner Colbert. Cal Rayborn III (3) continued his assault on the AFM number-one plate with a victory in the Formula Pacific class at Sears Point Internat ional Raceway. Results f..3: 1. Cra ig Avery (Hon) ; 2.
