Mark Robinson (S) won the event. Am final with somewhat of a vengeance. From the pole position, the Larson's Cycle/M.D . Boehlke Trucking/Genera l Engineering/JRG Performance/C&:B Auto /Chuck Loneman/ Lou's Leathers/White Bros.-sponsored Boehlke grabbed the holeshot and thundered to an uncontested flag-to-flag victory. Behind him the battle for second raged between Longcor and Rand y Triplett. Triplett took the position from Longcor as the duo crossed the line on the white-flag lap, but slid wide in the next tum giving the funner-up spo t back to Longcor for good. Billy Hoffmiester and Eric Brouhard raced to fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively. In 500c Pro-Am heat action, 250-mounted Verdeen Langland edged Boehlke to earn the pole position for the main even t. At the sta rt Boeh lke grabbed the holeshot and led Kenton Longcor, Langland, Bob Anderson, Peter Tapkin, Eric Brouhard and Mike Lalley down the back chute. By t he th ird go-around, the trio of Boehlke, Longcor and Langland broke away from the pack. Boehlke remained in charge while Longcor and Langland repeatedly exchanged the second-place spot The actio n was hot thro ughout the race and it finally reached a boiling point on the last lap when Longcor pul led to the inside of Boehlke in tum three in his bid for the lead . That's when the law of physics came into play (two objects cannot occupy the same place at the same time). The end res ult was Boehlke goi ng down. Longcor went on to win. Elizabeth " Bits y" Kantor, d oubled up by winning both the 125 and 250cc B classes. With on ly two rounds remaining, Kantor holds a comfortable championship point margin in both divisions. Lee Mies Jr. won his first race of the year duri ng the Mic ro Mini class heat race. Andrew Larson, however, went on to win in the main event ahead of Mies, Matthew Crandell and Alex Gardner. Having not competed since the Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn 's, Kevin Foley dusted off his bike and posted a four-moto sweep of the 25+ and 30+ clas ses at round two of the AMA /World Sports Florida Gold Cup Series at Dade City Raceway . In the first 30+ moto, Jon Ortner grabbed the lead with Foley, Rick Perry, Ron Dobbs and Wyn Kern in tow . As the 26-rider field entered the back section, Foley and Ortner got set to do battle. Foley slipped by Ortner to take over the point position. While Foley and Ortner battled, Dobbs motored by Perry for the third spot. Kern and John Lundy tangled in a tum with both rid er s hitting the dirt and moving Mark Beamer into fifth. Foley , on his Team Green / Shoei/ Oa kley / Dunlop /FMF /Performance Engineering /Rentha l / Kawasaki of Ocala-ba ck ed ma chine opened up a three-second lead by the halfway po int. Perry repassed Dobb as the w hite flag appeared, and Tim Eggers pressured Beam er for fifth. Foley crossed the finish line with six seconds to spare over Ortner, Perry and Dobb . Beamer and Eggers entered the fma l tum side b y side, and as they crested th e fini sh-li ne jump the two riders hit in th e air, ca us ing Beamer to go down and lose the fifth po sition to Egge rs. • The second-mote start was a repea t of mota one, w ith Ortner lead ing the wa y and Foley, Dobb and Lundy giving cha se. After entering from the back section on the opening lap, Foley wa s all alone out front with Dobb and Lundy following. Ortner was down on the tra ck and didn't finish the race. David Small was holding down the fourth spot, unti l Beamer and Eggers made thei r way by. Foley cruised to a 15-second win over Dobb and Lundy. SEPT. 17 Rick Fiscel scored a runaway w in in the 750cc Pro Twin class du ring the Orner's Gopher Racing-promo ted Vintage Di rt Track Riders Association National at the Kand iyohi County Fairgrounds 3/l>-mile oval. Fiscel's heat race win earned him the pole pos ition for the 750cc Pro Twin ma in event. The final was a duplicate for FisceJ. as he charged to the checkers for the win virtually uncontested . Matt George bettered his hea t race performance by one positi on, finishing in second place ahead o f Da ve Barkle y. Steve Bog gs a nd Tom Laird were fou rth and fifth, res pective ly, while Mark Robi nson nu rsed his misfiring machine home for sixth. In a rematch of the V.D.T.R.A. National held a few weeks ago in Howard Lake, the Vintage Sin gle class sa w Robi nso n a nd Tim G rego ry engage in what had to be one of the most popular races of the evening. After the sta rt, Gregory lead the way for the first three laps before being passed by Robinson. Gregory would continue to assume th e lead in the corners, but wa s at a horsepower di sad vantage on the straigh ts as Robinson wo uld strike back. The race-long battle was certainly a crowd pleaser, with Robinson nipping Gregory at the wire for the win . Eastlee finished a close second, with Snyder and Charlie Langland rounding out the top five, Steve "Th e Thrill" Hill scored h is fourt h Tw in Amateur class victory of the yea r with a strong performance. Eastlee finished a comfortable second well ahead of a close race for third between Mike Zbrozek and Cla rk Beal. Zbrozek final ly landed the position from Beal with Joel Gulbranso n and Joe Blackwell rounding out the field . Th e 50+ class heat w inner Barkley, ca me back to score the win in the main even t wi th Boggs in hot pursuit Bob Ives and Robert Battin settled for the third and fourth pos itions. Kyle Baird pu t in a stro ng second-moto showing to take the overall victory in the 250cc Beginner class at the Starwest Racing facility's "Saturday Night under the Stars Series." In the first moto, Vic Tashjian stormed out of the gate aboard his VZ2SO to grab the holeshot, His moment in the sun was just that, as Chuck Clark railed the outside line in tum two and launched his Suzuki RM250 over the "Launcher" to take away the lead. Brian Carino followed Clark's line around Tashjian and began to close on the Suzuki rider when the front end of his Honda washed out dropping him back into the masses. While Clark was extending his lead, Whitefor d w as runnin g a solid sec ond when Baird carne cha rgin g u p through the ran ks. He challenged the Kawasaki rider as the pair charged the back straigh taway, and when they emerged from behind the "Phan tom Comer," Baird was second . Up front, Clark we nt on to ta ke the checke red. with Baird a d ist ant second and Nelson charging from the back of the pack up into th ird. Newman was fourth. and Whit eford held on to the number~five posi tion. Whe n the ga te fell to s ta rt o ff the second moto, Nelson timed its faU perfect ly to lead the pack into the first turn, but it was Baird sweeping in from the outside to lead the horde of riders up to tum two. Clar k was in good position in third . Baird headed the pack aU the wa y down the back straightaway and back out into view of the specta tors. On the third lap Cla rk turned on the a fterburners and outju mped Nelson on the big tablet op lea d ing to the back s traigh taway to grab second from the Honda pilot. Clark closed the gap on Baird as the pa ir app roached the rockers. Baird stuck to the outside proven line while Clark wen t into the more challenging inside line, cased the second set of whoo ps and then landed on the face of the following dips off balance. He feU over, breaking off his clutch lever in the process. Baird. went on to go wire to wire this moto w ith Nelson hounding him all the wa y to the checkered flag. Smith seizes OTHG Hollister Women's Motocross By D. Matthews HOWSTER,CA,SEPT. 17 Sherlyn Smith rode hard and scored the victory in the Bay Area OTHG Women 's Nati onal MX a t the Hollister Hills OHV. Moto one was holesho t by Debbie Matthews, who wa s nu rsing a tom elbo w v The pursuing pac k was relentl ess, houndin g her at eve ry tum, but Matthew s used her expe rie nce to hold off th e pers istent ch arges of a determined Val Roberts. Roberts final ly execu ted 'a beautiful inside pass to sna tch th e lead. This infla med Matthews, and a real batt le ens ued. Matthews tried to re taliate immediately, but was blocked at every atte mp t. Robe rts led for the next three laps, hounded by Matthews, who finally faked outside and drove insid e Roberts to retake the lead in a tight uphill tum. Third pla ce was held by Lyd ia Cou ch, fol- · lowed by Susan Andrew s, Sherlyn Smith and Heather Matthews. As Couch tried to stay with the leaders she fell, relegating herself to sixth. Smit h took advantage, pounced, a nd took ove r th ird. Debb ie Ma tthe ws, led all but the last two laps, as he r injuri es becam e too much to bear , allowing Roberts to make the pass and score the moto victory. Debbie Matthews finished second , with Smith, Co uch and Heather Ma tthews following. For moto two , the battle lines were drawn. Roberts need ed to beat Matthews, w ho also n eed.ed to win a nd hope her inju ry wouldn ' t stop her. Smith needed a win to force a tie and take the overall. Debbie Matthews holeshot moto two and led almost every lap. Roberts kept up the pressure, pushing Matthew s, try ing to forc e the issue. Smith sat in th ird waiting for an opportunity. Opportunity knocked two laps from the end . Debbie Matthews still led with Roberts looking for a wa y around bef ore falling vict im to the heavily wa tered track. Smith passed the downed Roberts and set ·after Matthews, who again was strugglin g wit h h er in jury. Smith passed Matthews over the back jump for the win , and Matthews again sett led for second . SEPT. 24 Will Murphy came back from a season-shortening injury to post the win in the 125cc Beginner class at Lakeside Motosport Racewa y. Murphy had been riding well this sea son, but bro ke his arm in practice at Lakeside seven weeks ago . Mu rp hy decided to push his luck and rode the 125cc Beginner race a week before he was supposed to be back on a bike.
