Timmy " Red Dog" Ferry posted a 1-1 tally to
take top money in th e Pro class during round
one o f the 12th Ann ual AMA/World Sports
Florida Go ld Cup Series.
In the opening moto of the Pro class , Ferry
jumped out to the early lead w ith Ricky Hampshire, Paul Currie, Anthony Pocorobba an d Earl
May in pursuit. By the end of th e firs t circu it,
Ferry ha d pulled out to a five-second advantage,
while Gene Na u mec motor ed by May for the
fift h p osition. Ar ou nd la p three, Ha m p sh ir e
started to feel the pr essure from behi nd by Currie an d Pocoro bba. Currie darted by Hampshire
entering the "Gator Pit" and started to close the
gap on Ferry. Pocorobba a n d Na umec b oth
found away aroUnd Ha mpshire two laps later.
Ferry cruised in to take the win some four seconds ahead of Currie, Pocorobba , Naumec and
Hampshire .
As the ll-rider field exited the first comer,
Pocorobba was in the lead , with Hampshire,
Naumec, Ferry and Erick Claissie following.
Ferry railed the outside of a turn to move by
Naumec, and Currie also passed Naumec on a
high-speed double jump. Ferry then set his
sights on Hampshire and displaced him at the
end of the second lap . Pocorobba held the lead
position until the halfway point, when his front
wheel washed out in a tum. letting Ferry by .
Pocorobba remounted just in front of Currie
who slipped by Hampshire in the previous tum.
Pocorobba fell again this time getting back
underway out of the top five. Ferry now enjoyed
an eight-second lead over Currie. Naumec was
on the move, passing the down ed Hampshire
and closing in on Currie. With two laps to go
Naumec was attached to Curries rear fender and
made several passing attemps only to come up a
wheel short at the finish . Ferry crossed the finish
line to record the moto and overall win, with
Currie, Naumec, May and Andre Pene rounding
out the top five spots.

The final race of the day would be for the
Ama teur, Expert and AA cla sses. There were
ove r 200 riders signed up for the event, which
would run seven laps. The AA class lined up on
the front row, and with the drop of the flag. they
we re o ff. Kris Mooney got the holeshot, fo llowed closely by Tea m Mirage's Tom Norton,
who pas sed Moo ney on a straightaway within
two miles of the start.
Norton wo u ld continue in the lead through
the first lap, followed very closely by Phe lps. For
the remainder of the event, the two would continue to swap the lead positi on several times, as
the track beca me very slow and slippery, ma king staying o n the bik e very difficul t.
By the en d of th e se co n d la p, Phe lps and
Norton had taken a large lead over third -pla ced
Jerry Med or e, Mooney, Robe rt Spero ni, Chris
Chrispin and Randy McCann, all of whom were

ba ttling it ou t for third place.
At the end of the las t lap it looked like Norton would wa lk away with ano the r overall, as
he had begun to build a comfortable lead over
Phe lps. But in the en d, Phelps ca me away the
overall winner with a one-minute lead over
Norton. Norton had launched his KX200 in to a
tree on a thi rd-gear straightaway, doing extensive damage to the bike. Norto n was ab le to
nurse it in to finish second. Medore won the
battle for thi rd place ove rall, followed by
Mooney and Speroni. G uy Robe ry took the
Amateur win, with Patrick Timothy earning the
Expert win.
After the event. everyone gathered around
Norton's pit for the drawing of a brand-new
1994 Kawasaki 10<80, with the proceeds from
the raffle of the motorcycle, $2428, being donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The winn ing ticket was pulled by Donatello of the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles alo ng with the
he lp of a Ma ke-A -Wis h family. The b ike was
won by Ge rry Galpin of Syracuse, Ne w York.
Twe lve runner-up tickets were also p ulled, the
winners to be given T-shirts and hats.
