Gibso n's race sched ule only allowed him to

Pepsi race series, and Gibson faced tough competition in both classes by series po ints conte nders Allen Alford and ja y Ha user. Alfo rd
charged hard to try and steal Gibson's lead in
the 25+ A class only 10 come up inches short by
the end of moto one. Gibso n again jumped out
front of the 25+ A class in molo two, but it was
Sonn y Mitche ll hot in p ursuit in second . Hauser
was wo rking his hardest to hold Alford back in
fourth when Alford swapped in so me rough
stu tte r bum ps and high -s ided , ta kin g himself
o u t of th e battle for the top spo ts. All ho ugh
Alford d idn 't win the battl e on this day, he did
w in the war as he took top overa ll hon ors in the

Hough, Schellenger take it to
the streets at Steamboat RR

Yamaha TZ ride r Donnie Hough was the runaway victor in the Race of th e Rockies GTU
class, while FZR-mounted Mark Schellenger d id
the deed in the Race of the Rockies GTO event
when the 14th annua l Steamboat Springs motorcycle road races w ere held by the Motorcycle
Racing Association of Colorado.

Hamish get the sta rt w ith Aaro n Turner, Dave
Saba, j.T. Terry and Kurt Dim ick jockeyin g for
position. Hamish led for a lap befor e lettin g
Turner pa ss on th e fast downhill en tra nce to
tum one. Hough had 10start from the middle of
the grid, and was .working his way to the front
at a rapid pace. Turner opened up a sligh t lead
over the battle for second between Harnish ,
Saba and Terry. Behind the trio of riders, Hough

was making up time and was soon at their heels.
Hough passed Hamish and Terry on the outside
of tum seven and carried his speed around tum
10 to pas s Saba down the straigh t.
Up front, Turner had a three-second advantage with five laps remai ning but was steadily
loos ing g ro u nd to Hough. .T wo laps later,
Hough passed Turner and immediately opened
up a lead tha t he would take to the flag for the
w in . Saba rode home in th ird , with Hamish ,
Terry , and Dimick completing the top six spo ts.
Race of the Rockies GTO saw Ricky Orlando
and Schellenger battle from the start for the lead .
Orlando ran under Schellenger going in to the
en trance of tum three to take the lead . Orlando
was rid ing his ZX-9 wi th D.O.T. Dunlops a nd
had an edge for a couple of laps while the others
waited for their slicks to com e up to temperature. But by the end of the fourth lap, Orlando's
tires were starting to lose traction, and he was
sta rting to slid e the rear of the bike coming out
of the slower comers, lelling Schellenger get up
the inside of the tight tum one an d into the lead .
With two laps remaining, Orlando had his
hands full with john Hopperstad tailing closely,
wailing for the slightest error that might allow

him the opportunity to pass. Schellenger had the
track dialed and held on for the win by four bike
lengths over the sliding O rlando. Ho pperstad
tried everything he could to get by Orlando but
came up short 10finish third.
