The second moto saw Schnell prove himse lf by working up from outside of th e top five to eventually winning the moto. Raymond Bowers led much of the race but gave way to Schnell during th e closing la p s of the moto. Schne ll crossed the line for the victory , with Bow ers a close second and Brown a few seconds beh ind in thir d. Some 25 riders filled the starting ga te for the 12Scc Beginne r race, making it one of the larges t classes of the day. Willoh, Dubach dial in Salinas Arenacross By Joan Tieamey SAUNAS, CA, SEPT. 17 -18 Jeff Willo h scored the 125cc Pro win and Doug Dub ach th e 250cc Pro victory in the Bud weiser / Pepsi-Cola/O n Trac Events-promoted are nacross at the California Rodeo Gro unds. Sunday's afternoo n racing got u nderway with top pros like Dubach, Michael Brand es and Casey Johnson mixing it up with up-an d-comers Jeff WilIoh, Chris Wheeler, Justin Tieamey and Shawn Pero lio, amo ng others. The 125cc Pros gated with Jeff Willoh out front, followed by Sp ud Walte rs and th e O'Neal/Yamaha-backed Dubach setting a blazing pace. Du bach quickly shot around Walters to take over second place and leave Walters to battl e Ben Vitale in fourth and Brian Roth running fifth. Lap after lap , Willoh and Dubach battled in the sandy cond itions wh ich mad e it impo ssible to hold good lines, bu t Dubach was determined t o p ass th e blazingly fas t kid on the gree n m ach in e. O n lap 15 Du ba ch, was ab le to ge t aro und Willoh when a Iapper refused to get out of the way. Willoh lost precious second s in the fou r laps rema in in g and would s tay behind Dubach to the checkered flag . The holes hot in the second 12Scc moto went MORENO VALLEY, CA,SEPT. 24 Elton Martins p ut in two goo d rid es, taking advantage of other competitors' mish ap s and a dear, open course in fron t of h im to take the overall victory in the 250cc Beginn er class during the Starwest Saturday Night under the Stars Sup ercross. Whe n th e gate dropped to sta rt th e first moto Dave Nelso n jumped out to an early lead . He was quickly d ealt with by Martins, who drag-raced Nelson down the back straightaway, and when the pair em erged from the "Phantom Comer," it was Nelson now in second with Martins in the lead positi on. Mar tins continued to pull away and had a comfortable lead as took the checkered . Nelson held off the late charges of Chuck Clark, Steve Kovak and Kyle Baird , who rounded out the top five slots. Nelso n also took the second -mot o holesh ot, but the Honda hot shot wasn't abo ut to be surprised th is mo to; he k ept th e th rottle pinned dow n the back straightaway and actually pulled awa y from his purs ue rs. Behind him , Kovak was ru nn in g sec o nd wi th a good batlle for th ird between Clark and Marlins. ·Martins wa ited for a bobble from Clark, but only briefly, as he took a different line through th e rocker s an d made the pass. Nelson wa s d oing one- ha nd ers off the bi gger jumps.while enjoying his lead , but the troops were closing, as Kovak was bu sy staying in front of Martins and had picked up the pace a notch. With tw o laps remaining Nelson's showboa t anti cs got the better of him as he lost con trol of . his bike after landing with only one hand on the bars and handed the lead over to Kovak, who still had Martins breathing down his neck. Hoenshell by inches at Rim Bender Cross Country By Darry l Smith MONTAGUE, TX,SEPT. 18 Clay Hoenshell pushed his Suzuki RMX to the top of Pro class at round 13 of the Tucker/Rocky Texas Cross Country Racing Series nea r Montague, Texas. Yamaha Suzuki of Texas/MSR/TR/ DB5- ba cked Hoenshe ll go t his usu al holeshot and simply took off. KTM's Dean Lane stayed close and used his high-speed skills to pass Hoenshell on the openi ng lap . Hoenshell wo uld catch back up in the woods, then Lane woul d pu ll him on the straights. After three laps of following Lane, Hoenshell started rid ing over his head on the straights to keep up. Lane lost the lead when he was too cautious passing a lapper, and Hoenshe ll got by both of the m. ., During the final two lap s, Lane pressured Hoenshell bu t could not make the pass as Hoenshell always kept the good line . At the barrels they were side by side, with the nod going to Hoenshell. Lane was a little tired after winning the morning Four-Stroke Expert class and d idn 't have that extra energy left to get by Hoenshell. The 30+ Expert start was wild , as some of the riders lined up on the insid e and touched bars. Bobby Southard got knocked sideways and was heading to the outside of the first tum , crossing th e pa th of the riders on the ou tsi de. Da rry l Smith hu n g off to th e s ide o f hi s b i ke as Southa rd nearly took out his front wheel. Larry Dodson managed to get the holeshot w ith Steve Reavis second and Smith tucking in for thir d. Smit h chose the faster line comi ng out of the fi~t creek to pass Reavis. Later on lap one, Smith motored by Dodson on a fifth-gear whoo ped-o ut h ill, on ly to be repassed whe n he chose a lon ger line around a slower rider . Smith got back by on lap two and neve r let u p, bu ild in g a fou r- m in u te lead . Sou thard worked up to seco nd bu t a rear flat allowed Reavis to pass him unde r the white flag.
