Brandes snags Silver State MX By Joan TIeamey CARSON Cl1Y, NY, SEPT. 11 Answer/Shoei/FMF/Smith-supported Michael Brandes clinched bo th 250cc Pro-class mot os during round three of the CMC North Trans-Cal series at Silver State Raceway. • Shane Esposito got the holeshot as top riders fro m Southern and Northern California ba ttled for position. Esposito fought hard and led the race, while the Yamaha of Bran des con tin ued to press him . Michael Brandes not only stayed close to Espos ito bu t had to watch his back as Spud Walters was in hot p urs u it. Walters inched his bike into third place off the sta rt while Pat Go rom, Justin Tieamey and Kenn y Lash battl ed mid p ack. Ca sey Johnson su ffered a med iocr e start on unfamiliar turf along with Lowell Mou ral and Rick Ryan. Esposi to continued his forge for the checkered as he and Bra ndes left the pack. Johnson was working his wa y up every lap, and, by lap five, was stalking Walters for the third position. Go mm ran consistently in the fourth position with Kenn y Lash in fifth. Brandes continued to close in on Espos ito bu t was unable to make a p ass . On lap seven, Johnson passed Walters in lapped traffic. Last-lap action saw Brandes pass Esposito ove r the tabletop fmish-line jum p while Esposito was suddenly caught in a lapper line . Brandes took the ins ide and squeaked th rou gh to ta ke the checkered. Esposito wa s second, Joh nson landed third, Walters was fou rth an d . Gorom fifth. Johnson pulled off the second-mo te holeshot in front of Brandes, Gomm, Esposi to and Sco tt Stillmock. Bran des was determined to pass and overtook Jo hnson on the back sec tion o f th e track. As th e res t of the pros settled in and planned th eir moves, the two fro nt-runners picked up the p ace and left the pack again. Gorom, Esposito and StiIlmock ran third, fourth and fifth, but Esposito needed to get on the gas to catch the leader for hopes of an overall Brandes and Johnson continued to hammer the turns, making eye contact over the tabletop jumps and pus hi ng eac h other hard. Johnson never d id get the pass on Brandes bu t earned a well-deserved second overall Brandes took the checlcered and two perfect moto wins. Danger and controversy entered the picture with a five-rider crash caused by oil on the track, which temporarily stopped the race.
