Treadwell, still second with Barton gainin g on him , began reeling in Carter near the halfway point. Best of friends off the track, Barton a nd Treadwell were all business as they diced for second. Barton closed to w ithin five lengths, jumped off the infield tabletop side by side with Treadwell, and then passed him in the ne xt berm. Johnson made up the lost ground to O'Connor early in the second half of the race and was all over him for nearly a lap before throttling past for the lead. O'Connor stayed right with Johnson the remainder of the race but ended up fifth. Johnson maintained his lead to the checkered flag with Barton a distant second. Results 50 ; 1. III-II WERA closed out the season at Grattan Raceway with a talent-packed weekend once again, as Greg Gib son clinched his WERA Michigan GP title, and a small but mighty Canadian invasion provided the excitement for spectators as well as racers . In Saturday's Heavyweight 5O-mil r, Gibson e held the lead for the first two laps . Then, 1993 Canadian Champion and McBride Cycle / Dunlop Canada's Jeff Sneyd wasted no time slicing through the pack to take over first by the third lap . Gibson was unable to answer Sneyd 's challenge. On the fifth lap , Gibson cra shed in the "Bowl" when he dragged hi s CBR 's engi ne cases, losin g the front end. With Gibson gone, Sneyd eased the pace but was challenged from the six t h lap on by KMM /Hindle Exhaust System's James Pe rreault. Sneyd held onto the lead w ith relative ease. Ontario Competition Fue l's Glen Paron becam e a threa t to Perreault o n lap 12 and traded places with him for a couple of lap s un til Par on's clutch put him out of the race on the 14th lap . Paron later said he'd felt it slipping and then it finally let go. Sneyd and Perre ault d istanced themselves from the rest of the field and took th e win and secon d pl ace, respect ively. When Paron exited , Ramon Vasquez Jr. inherited third and made it stick. whil e Fred Mulder took fourth. David DeRanne, finally overcoming a season burdened by engine seizure problems, finished fifth. Sunday's Michigan GP sa w th e ba ilie renewed between Gibson and Sneyd. Two races earlier, in the Expert race, Sneyd had high-sided in Grattan's off-camber tum three and had to repa ir the bike quickly to make the grid, m issing the hot lap in the process. Gibson instantly took the lead and held it with Sneyd shadowing him for the first half of the race . On lap six, Sneyd finally passed Gibson on the stra ightaway heading into tum one. Gibson tried to get by Sneyd in turn four by going up the inside but gassed it too hard, almost high-siding coming out of the tum. and had to back off. Sneyd rode a textbook race and beat Gibson to the checkered flag. Gibson's second place nabbed him the Michigan GP Championship in this final round. Results H /W 5O-MIU:R EX 1. II Torque Cente r /Midwest Action Cycl e/AXObacked Eron Ezerins powered to wins in the 125 and 250cc A classes a t the Lake Mills MX facility. In both 125cc A motes, Yamaha-mounted Andy Bowman beat the pack to the first tum. In moto one, Bowman held the lead for two laps, with Todd Mayer looking for the quicker line around him. By this time, the clearly faster trio . of Scott Nicoson. Ezerins , and Karter Busse were closing in on the two leaders. Nicoson. Ezerins, and Busse wasted no time pulling away from the pack. and they finished the first moto in that order, followed by Brad [erominski, Team 2 Racing's Ryan DeGroot, and Jason Warner. Bowman eventually faded to seventh after holeshotting the moto . Bowman was followed by Ezerins and Todd Warne r in mota two , but Ezerins wasted no time in shutting the door on Bowman on the first lap. A few turns back, Nicoson, Jason Warner, [erominski, Busse and DeGroot provided edgeof-the-seat action by swapping positions for the next five laps before finishing the moto iri that order, The overall went to Ezerins with a 2-1 finish. followed by Nicoson. Jerominski, Busse and Jason Warner. Ezerins convincingly showed why he is a national-ealiber rider by easily taking both motos in the 250cc A division. Jerominsld was a consistent second in both motos, but couldn't hold the blistering pace set by Ezerins to make it a race. However, the second mota was a wave of Kawasaki green behind Ezerins, with Jerominski, Tom Zont and Scott Hicks in a three-way bat tle. Behind Ezerins in the overall standings were Jerominski, Tom Zont, Jason Warner and Scott Hicks . Warner and Zont swapped moto finishes with third and fifth. with Zont having the edge in the second moto . Results 125 JR: 1. 'oM Van Oudenhoven; 2. Cli ff Dougherty; 3. Neil Mod.;ewski.; 4. Hilton awarded after Willow Springs Road Race turmoil By Eric Vincent ROSAMOND, CA, SEI'T. 17-18 Controversy su rrou nded th e outcome of the Toyota Unlimited Road Race by Budw eiser Formula One during the ninth round o f Willow Springs Motorcycle Club events at Willow Spr ings International Raceway. Kent Kuni tsugu, the rid er wh o crossed the line firs t, was disqualified for a rule violation, giving the race victory to John Hilton. The disqualification prevented Kuni lsugu from taking victories in both the Fonnula One and Fonnula Two races that day. - As the race got underway, it was Dean Vincent who took the holesh ot off the line, his best F·l s ta r t e ver. Fo llo w ing him w e re Curtis Adams and Lance Holst. Down the back stra ight on the first lap, Holst was passed by a cha rging Hilton . Meanwhile, running in fifth at this point was Kunitsugu, as he was d osin g on the lead ers with his Yamaha TZ25O. Completing the first lap, Vincent continued to lead but was Soon passed by Adams. A lap later, a five-rider battl e was un d erway for the lead . Rounding tum two, Lance Holst crashed and was out of contenti on, redu cing the fray to four ride rs. A few turns later, Adams emerged with the lead followed by Kuni tsugu second and Hilton in third. As lap four go t und e rway, Kunit su gu moved a round the inside of Ad ams in tum two to move himself into the lead . However, Kunitsugu made his pass in a comer where a waving yellow caution flag was being d isplayed, a violation of WSMC rul es. Unaware of h is e rro r, Kunitsugu continued to hold on to the race lead for the rema inder of th e even t . Me anwhile, Adams was pushed back int o third after being passed by Hilton going through tum one as the fifth lap got underway. Vincent was fourth and the top four riders maintained their positions for the remainder of the race. Kuni tsugu's rule violation resulted in his disqualification and that gave the race wiD. to Hilton with Adams taking second and Vincent third. In the Maxima Racing Oil Formula Two race, Walt Dorsch had an excellent drive off the line to give him the early lead . However, it proved to be short-lived, as he was passed by Kunilsugu going into the second tUm. Holst eventually finished second behind Kunitsugu, giving third place to Dorsch. Results F-l : 1.
