Vanderpool drowns 'em out at Starwest Motocross By David A. Procida MORENO VALLEY, CA, AUG. 10 Tay lo r Vanderpool took the wi n in th e 125cc Beginn er class during the Marty Smith Supercross Series at Sta rwes t Supercross Park. [n moto on e, Howey Eriks on gr abbe d the lead ea rly with Vanderpool and Tyler Bargiel hot on his heels. The trio stayed tigh t for over four lap s be fore Bargiel dropped off the pac e, but the battl e for the lead went the entire moto . At the checkered the order remained the same, setting the stage for mo to two. Erikson again got the drop on the pack in the second moto, bu t on the ope ning lap he encountered problems in the rocker section. Erikson d oub led the first set o f seven tig htly spaced jumps, cased hard on the second set, and, after applying a hand ful of throttle, was knocked off the pegs before doing a big "endo" into the last set. This handed the lead to Vanderpool, who wasn't about to took a gift· horse in the mouth, wi th Bargiel powering by the downed ride r for sec ond. Erikso n was back u p and underw ay quickly, and, with a ba dly bent pair of bars, set out after the lead pair. [t took him tw o laps to catch Bar giel, two more comers to get by, an d with a qu arter of the track up to Vanderpool, Erikson turned up the heal. For the next two laps the RM rider contino ued to close up the gap, hi tting every tum per[ectly and holding the throttle to the stops dow n the straightaways. With the whi te flag coming out for Vanderpoo l, Erikson had closed the ga p to less tha n a co u p le of bike lengths. Erikson cl ea red the grandstand double jum p with a little too much vigor and hit the scoring tower tab le-top ju mp wide open, com ing down a little too wid e. He drifted to the far outside and caught the trackside banners, bringing his charge to an end Erik- SOC (D-l 1): 1. Chris Hunain~ (Suz ). 80 (14-16) : I. OIcar Valdrz (Yam); 2.
