Kasinga captures Starwest Motocross win By David Procida MORENO VALLEY, CA, AUG. 13 Mike Kasinga put in a good sho wing, ta king both motos of the 30+ Beginner class d u ring rou nd 10 of the Suzuki-sponsored Ford Truc k Giveawa y Series at Starwest Supercross Par k. In the first mot o, john Stavros grabbed the holeshot with Kasinga, Derrick Lued tka and the pack right behind. Sta vr os had his hand s full, an d the competition p roved to be a little too stiff for the Yamaha rider, as Harold Heggi e powered a rou nd on th e ou ts ide lin e pa st all the front -runners for the point pos ition. Kasinga followed sui t with Luedtka qui ckly dis placing the earl y lead er, also. Up front, the battle for the lead was wa rming up . Kasinga used the infield double jump to fly past Heggie. Th e su rp rised Yama ha rider p icked up the pace in an attem pt to close up the ga p, but Kasinga wa s unst oppable as he p owered hi s YZ aro u nd the Starwest supe rcross trac k en route to victory. This set the stage for mo to two, and this lime it was Mike Kasinga gra bbing a clean holeshot to lead the p ack out on to the co urse. Lue dtka ga ted better th is mota and was right behind Stav ros . While Stavros elected to sing le the b ig grandstan d d ouble, Luedt ka aire d it ou t an d took over second. It took the next two laps for Luedtka to close the gap, and once he did , the duel for the lead was on. Lued tka began to stick a wheel in on Kas~ nga onl y to be sh ut o ut tu rn af ter turn . The n, with two laps remaining, Luedtka pu lled alongside of the teader and it was a drag race through the rockers . just when Lued tka began to edge out fron t, he tagged the face of the third set of rockers and went more sid eways than for~ ward givin g the lead back to Kasinga . Luedtka forced his way pas t Kasinga in the infield only to bobble and allow Kasinga back into the lead to take the checkered flag. Heggi e followed the pair, chalking up third overall . Light, riding a Kawasaki KXBO, con tin ue d the lengthiest win streak of the season - his fifth win in a row - after winning the 125cc A ma in, while Meusling, bes t known for his d omination in the motocross 250cc Amateur tanks, picked up a win in the talent-laden 250cc A ma in aboard a Yamaha. Shawn f1arlow and Light had great battles in all three 12Scc even ts. Ligh t won the first heat, while Barlow grabbed a win in heat tw o. Barlow took the lead at the s ta rt, but Light d ove inside exiting tum tw o, then spen t the en tire 10-lap main fend ing off Barlow. Timm y Ricketts was third. Ya ma ha rider Ken ny McCann had a goo d thin g going whil e out front of the 250cc A main but couldn't stay upright in the later st ages of the race, handing john Meuslin g, who had bt.'Cn hound ing h im throu gh ou t the race, th e lead. The 14-year-old obliged by takin g it the res t of the way to the fin ish to score an impress ive win Bultaco rider Doug MacDuffee follo wed in for second ahead of Lance Overm an, Terry Barlow and Robert Hoover. McCann's woes contin ued into the Open A ma in, wh ich again saw him come from a row th ree start to take the lead. McCann again lost it in the same spot, a nd the Suzuki-mounted Overman took the lead with MacDuffee, Terry Barloe, Paul Meusling a nd Rand y Layne filling the top five. Faria wows familyat Lake Perris By Elaine Jo nes LAKEPERRIS, AUG. 11 Mik e Far ia's famil y is visitin g from Roseville and, after his performance Thursday night at Lake Perris , they will definitely have something to talk about when they go hom e. Wi th fou r rounds o f Scra tch racing in the books, Faria had a perfect score of 16. john Aden was three back with 13, while Ch arlie Venega s and josh Larsen were tied with 12. The luck of the draw saw Faria on the pole with Ad en in two and Venegas and Larsen in three and four , respectively. It was a really sho rt race for Venegas, when he got in too deep, broke the tape and was excluded . On the second attemp t, Fari a got a super sta rt and was out on top with Larsen and Aden ba ttling for second . For four lap s the three ride rs were close enough to w ipe each other's goggles, but in the end , it wa s Far ia th e v ict or with Larsen and Ad en second and th ird , respecti vely. Rese rve rider Robb ie Saue r w a s g la d he show ed up, as he earned his way in to the Hand icap main and led it for four of the six laps. He didn't let just an yon e pass him eithe r, as only Larsen and Faria got to the checkered before he d id . Larse n and Faria both cam e from the BOyard-line like ther e was a million do llars waiting at the finish, and they ended up 1-2, respectively. Th e Sid ecar Ma in was a battle of the Kawasakis. At the sta r t it was Gardner and Lynch scoring the wi n, with Horsley and Medberry in second. Stephens a nd Stephens were third. H or sley and Medberry put some more pressure on Gardner and Lynch , but it wasn't enough to knock them out of first . On the second lap, Stephens and Stephens went low out of four and mad e the pa ss for second . They finished in that order. Charlie Cooley got the call in the Support main but it was short-lived when he got tangled u p with Orosco and dropped to the b ack. Orosco didn't fare much better as Dave Berry took over one lap la ter and brough t it on home. Orosco d id collect second with Ben Mears - rounding ou t the field in third. je re my Simmons bested the junior s with josh O'Nea l second, and joey Draper and Brando n Mitchell in third and fourth, respectively. Kasten, Ybema blaze Portage Half Mile By Bill Holt PORTAGE, WLjULYJO Steve Kasten and Bob Ybema took Pro cla ss wins as a full hou se of riders and fans graced the confines of the Por tage Fair making for a grea t evening of racing. Eleven 600cc Pros came from two heats for the main. Ybcma got anxious and found himself on the penalty line . On the res tar t, the gree n light flashed and it was the S-K Service /Gipps Racing /Spectro Oil-sponsored Yamaha of Kasten roaring to the point. Ybcma slipped past the front row and settled in behind Kasten coming out of tu m two. Ybcma then challenged Kasten at every tu m and nearly go t by several times, but when the dust settled , Kaste n had held on for the win, w ith Ybema s~ond, Tom B~ ies Mike Faria (9) has been practically unbeatable in Scratc h racing at Perris Speedway. Faria scored the win in the SCratch main and placed second In t he Handicap feature. third, Dale jones fourth and Mike Bertram fifth. Thirteen SOllee Pros filled the lanes for two heats a nd the final. The track had sta rted to groove up, and when Ybcma ripped off the line into the lead , all he had to do was ride a flawless race to take the win. john Dillenburg, Steve Kasten, George Istavanek and Dale jones swap ped sp ot s behind but couldn't get by th e steady Ybcma. . Tiffany Calv ert stav ed off Amber Kimmes and Derrick Webster for second. Larry's Cycle-backed Dave Cartwright moved quickly to the front and styled his wa y to the win over Mark Vanjof, Steve Prisk and Tim Palmer. Kasten lands Ellsworth ST By Bill Holt ELI5WORlll, WI, AUG. 14 For the first time in recent mem ory the threeeighth mile dirt oval at the Pierce Co unty Fairgrounds in Ellsworth, Wiscon sin, was revi ved , and the AMA Dirt Trackers and the Badger Racing Associ at ion came to to wn for the Pierce Cou nty Fair. A beautiful da y filled the bill for some grea t racin g. Steve Kasten led the racers in the SOOcc Pro final into the first tum and held off the pack for two laps. Coming out of tum four on the second lap, Verdeen Langland mad e a few inches on the inside un der Kasten to slip into the lead , and he never looked back. Kasten couldn 't keep it close, but Geo rge Istavanek kep t the hea t on Kasten until the end, for third. The 250cc Ama te u r belon g ed to 29-time Amateur N ational Ch ampion j.R.
