Former motocross great Danny "Magoo" Chandler, who has been promoting mountain bike races, is beginn ing to promote AMA / Dis trict 36 Mo tocross and European Scrambles . The Willow Springs Mo torcycle Club will present a new Suzuki GSXR1100W to a rac er participat ing in the club's To yota Cup Unlimited F/1 Series. Cycle News contributor Alan Cathcart rode the Future Perfect Racing Team's alloy framed, three-cylinder Saxon-Triumph to three wins at the eighth annual Zeltweg Speed Week four -stroke racing festival at the Zeltweg track in the mountains of Southern Austria on July 31. Cathcart's victories marked the first MeGrath-ot-alI-trades A win in international competition for Triumph in 19 years. Canadian road racer Jo n Corn well called to give the ed ito r all kinds of grief about listing his sponsor incorrectly in our report of the 250cc Grand Prix class at Brainerd International Raceway on July 31. Cornwell's sponsor is not Jackson Racing as is listed on the AMA entry sheets. McGrath won the race when Faria d id a tank slapper and almost went down. According to the Orange County Register, American Suzu ki Motor Corporation has nam ed Masao Nagura as their new president. Nagu ra is a 24-year veteran at Suzu ki, and takes the pl ace of Yoshinori Fuj ii , who is returning to Japan. Nagura has worked in the company's international auto-sales division since 1973, bu t will now oversee Suzu ki's auto, motorcycle and marine-engine business in Brea, California. according to th e Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC). During September and October, the MIC and Specialty Vehicle Institute of America (SVIA) will sponsor OHV workshops in New York and Kentu cky. The three-day events for professional land managers will combine classroom presentations with riding instruc tion and field studies in successful ATV and trailbike recreation manag ement. Pr esentations focus on trail design, construction and ma intenance combined with sound environmental planning and vehicle safety. The first workshop is set for Cortland in central New York, September 28-30 in coopera- . tion with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. The second workshop will be held Octob er 1820 at the Land Between the Lakes recre ation area in western Kentucky in cooperation with the Tennessee Valley Authority. According to Jim Williams, direcetor of OHV planning for MIC, the first day of each workshop is devoted to hands-on rider training using ATVsand off-hig hway motorcycles supplied by member compa nies of MIC and SVIA. Says Williams, "We find that once land man agement agency staff experience OHV rid ing, they are more will ing to learn about trail management." For the second day, OHV experts from Federal and state agencies serve as guest faculty in classroom-style lecture sessions. The third day is devote d to a trail rid e on the host agency's trails. Durin g the trail ride, participants have the opportunity to see, firs t-ha nd, some of th e design and maintenance techniques disc ussed in the classroom the previous day. Also du ring the ride, par ticipants learn stat eof-t he-a rt veh icle sound measurement procedures. Managers of public and private lands will hav e an opportunity to learn about OHV recreation first-hand th is fa ll, Del Mar Mile: It's on! lans for the October 16 Del Mar Mile have been finalized, and the AMA Grand National Championship Series will definitely come to a close at the pic~resque Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar, California. On August 2, promoter Chris Agajanian signed a contract with the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club to allow the use of ~ salt water track prepatory solutio n, and with that, everything is set for the season finale. "All the deals have been stru ck and the contracts have been signed," said a happy and relieved Agajanian. "Thin gs look good, and we're all very excited about the upcoming race." The race will mark the first time that a Grand National has been held at the facility, though a flat track motorcycle race was held there in 1949. "Del Mar is a beautiful facility," said Agajanian. "The sealing situation is fantastic, and I think that this is the nicest facility that the series will ever see.". . Former Grand National Champion Gene Romero will prepare the one-mile oval. The camp will determine exactly who will be designated for the U.S. Trophy and Junior World team pos itions. The remaining riders will be placed on Club teams and serve as alternates. The exact location of the training camp has not yet been determ ined. According to Brian Barnes, a promoter of the Augu st 14 Washougal National MX in Washington, former 250cc World MX Champion Donny Schmit is on the entry list for this year's event, the 10th stop on the AMA National MX circuit. Schmit's last U.S. ap pea rance was in 1993 when he competed at the Steel City National in Pennsylvania. After his well-publicized fall-out with his Ch esterfield Yamaha bosses, it's do ubtfu l that Schm it will compete on one of the uniqu e-looking black and red Team Chesterfield Yarnahas.
