Buyer beware I jus t began reading Kit Palmer's report on the new Honda Shadow Am erican Classic. and was immediately sh ocked by the lack of k nowledge a n d fa cts exhibited therein. There's noth ing new about a Shadow 1100 h av in g th e words "Made in Am erica " on the back of the passenger p ad . Th e y ' v e sa id {ha t on them for years . And I can 't be lie v e tha t th e engin e of the new mod el is mad e in Japan. either. The bike ca r ries a n "i" for the fir st digit of the V.I.N. w hic h means the bike has at least 75% Ame rican co n ten t, which w oul d appear to imply that the 'engin e w as ma de her e as the other Shadow 1100 engine has been for years. And while Kit say s that the remainder of the components not produced in Marysville are provided by U.S. suppliers, such parts as ca rb s, forks, brakes, and so on. just as on the Ha rley-Dav idson. are imported from Japan. And the Yuasa batteries, which you refer to as Jap anese, are generally made in Pennsylvania. in the old Exide plan t w hich Yuasa bought several years ago. I don' t know if I can make it through the rest of the article or not. b ut tho ug ht I sh ou ld contact you im me d ia tely, so that you can reassign Palmer to writing abou t Japanese mini bikes or dumping Carruthers' wastebasket - which doubtless will be filled with letters jus t like this one from the Ha rley-Davidson and Ho nda camps. Joh n Waaser Ga in esville, FL I think that not only should you finish the article, but perhaps you should start again. Palmer never saidthat this year's Shadow is thefirst to have the words. "Made in America" on the back of the seat. In addition according to Honda - the engine in the Shadow. like allotherShadows, is being produced in Japan. The only Honda tha! is totally produced in Marysville is the Gold Wing - as it has been since July 2, 1985 and that motorcycle is actually exported to Japan. You are correct, however, in saying that the Yu asl7 batt ery is made in the U.S....Editor. LECT Ho nda rider Jeff Stanton for the rid e he as given all of the motocross fans for the last six years. Jeff is the reason I got invo lve d in motocross (I a m an enc yclopedia of mo tocross for the las t six years), even tho ug h all of my famil y are off-roaders . I firs t sa w Jeff at the 1988 Red Bud 125/ 500 National, where he battled (on a YZ490) with Rick Johnson for the win .. Jeff go t seco nd . Th is season I atte nded the Pontiac Supercross and the Red Bud and Tr oy Nationals, and Jeff put on a great show. The Troy National saw him lead th e majori ty of the second moto while 90% of the crowd chee red for him . I wa s s till roo ti ng for h im as Mi ke LaRo cco was on the verge of passing, while the ma jority turned and cheered for laRocco. You could see me running up the fence screaming. "Go. Jeff," as he raged pa st. Jeff anno unced at Troy that he wo uld co nti nue to be a member of th e 1-800COL LECT team, as an ad visor . after his retirement; I. as w ell as othe rs , were hap py to hear that ne w s. Hearin g the announcemen t fr om Je ff h elp ed m e make a career decision. I would like to become a non-rider member of a team on the circuit. rather than just an extreme fan. I wan ted to become a pro rider, but at the age of 21 I thought it was too late (figu ring that I'm a C-Ievel rider). Thank you Cycle News for giving Jeff the publicity that he so much deserved, even when he was down, and for giving us readers more reaso n to roo t Jeff on. Jeff might no t talk to fans like his teamma te .jere my McGrath, but h e d oes sho w he appreciates his fans . I am not at all bothered that my writing wo uld not be understoo d by some idiot. An d I would never suggest for a minute that you censor criticism of my w ork. What is unconscionable, by any reasonable professional standard, is that you w o u ld allow any glu ehead to accuse me, or an y of your oth er contributors . of egregious, crimina l behavior in a libelous manner for no apparent reason. The very least you should have done, as editor, was delete the personal attacks from the letter . They were, of course. totally spurious and completely irrelevant, and had nothing whatsoever to d o with my w ri ting, the very sa me wo rk that I would hope is generally well received. If that p roved too daunting a task, and I can 't im agin e how it could, you should have made so me atte mp t to refu te these hein ou s accusations . I don't believe that would be too terrib ly strenu o u s given m y n e arly 20 yea rs of un blem ished service . As a las t resort, something it should never have come to. you should have given me a cha nce to defend myself against the claims of this nitwit. Given the base tone of the letter, that yo u would see fit to include it in Cycle News does a disservice to all your readers, not just me. Even if it didn't include an assault on me personally, I would object to its publication. The very least you should do is apologize to bo th me and the readers for your lapse of editorial judgment. . In the fu ture, if yo u're uncertai n about w het her to allow so me obvious lia r the opportuni ty to debase one of your co nt ributo rs, call me, and I'll do my best to dissuade you.
