Linkogle lands Perris victory By Tony Alessi PERRIS,CA, JULY16 Larry Linkogle surfaced as the top 12Scc Pro ride r at round five of the GFI Win a Truck Night Racing Series a t Perris Raceway. Tadatsune Kiyota led the first th ree la ps of the first race. He was ri di ng as fast o r a little faster than mos t of his pursuers d uri ng the early goings until Linkogle began to pe rform a hairrai sing d oubl e. With eac h lap, Lin kogle closed the gap a little more, then mad e the pa ss jus t before the halfway point. Linkogle tried to pu ll away fro m Kiyota, but he stayed very close in seco nd. With less than three laps to go, Kiyota got crossed-up in a se ries of ruts and went d own, opening the door for Terry Parsons who gladly picked up the runne r-up position. Linkogle cruised home for an easy win with Parsons well off the pace in second, and Greg Schnell fini shed third d esp ite starting in las t p lace. The secon d m o ta saw Linkogle pull the ho lesho t with Dana Wiggins righ t on his tail. Wiggins pushed Linkogle ha rd for seven laps before he pushed his way past with tw o lap s to go. Linkogle tried twice to retake the lead bu t his efforts were thwarted each time . Mike Metzge r foug h t h is way around th e track, finishi ng third . Jason Padilla and Bret Milan battled in bo th 2SOcc Novice motes, wit h Padilla edging Milan out at the finish. Results (Top) Kevfn Wheat (267) and Mike Todd (62) lead a field of 125cc Beginners out of a comer during mot o action at round flve of the GFI "Win a Truck" Night Motoross Series at Perris Raceway. Lorain, Crane clash at Albany Short Track By Clay Light . ALBANY, OR.JULY 15 It was a clas h of the hea vyweights at Alba ny Speed way du ring the Craig Farnswo rth-promoted quarter-mile short track, as Yamaha-mo unted Steve Lorain and Honda rider Frank Crane waged the season 's best battle in the Open A Main. The largest turnout of riders were on ha nd for the even t, the fifth in a series of 11 events at the facility, displaying some pretty amazing talent for the large crowd of spectators on han d . A full lineup of Open class contestants were ready to do battle, comprised of both flat-trackers and m ot ocro ssers. Lorai n , who is the track's start/finish flagman, p ut on his skid shoe to test his flat-track skills, pulling the opening lap lead . . AMA Expert Crane, last week 's winner, was righ t th ere to press ure Lo ra in, w hile Pr o motocrosser Gary Beyer, riding a KTM 640, ran in the thick of thin gs as well. Beyer couldn't stay at the leaders' pace and dropped to thir d, where he got a bi rd'e-eye view of the battle up front between Lorain and Crane. Lorain held off Crane 's finis h-line attempt to pass, nabbin g the firstmot a w in, w hile Beyer , Mike Kohl and Larry Reed filled the top five. Crane got the jump on the field in the second mota, but Lorain dove inside and stole the lead away fro m th e vetera n rid er. Cr an e, though, dove right back one comer later to take it back. The batt le raged on for the next several laps unti l Lorain took control late in the race and held it for the for the win via 1-1 showing s to rel ega te Crane to second over Reed and Roby Leach. Another grea t shootout occurred d uring Pee Wee actio n between Corey Bye, th e rid er who normally d om in a tes the class here, and newcomer Sonny Lee. Lee, aboar d a Yamaha , did an incredible job of fending off Bye's ad vances to take a n ' overa ll w in af te r d o m in at in g b o th motos. Stogsdill beats Behrle at Lawrenceburg Short Track By John Spurrier LAWRENCEBURG, IN JULY 22 . , Gary Stogsd ill ove rcame a tricky race track and a strong field of professiona l racers to win the Pro-Am feature at the Lawrencebu rg short track. An ea rly eveni ng shower d ela yed the program an d ad de d to th e so mber mood of th e evening as the local raci ng fraternity mourned the passing of Jim Hedrick. Hedrick, a retired Speedway and Class C race r. was the original builder and p romo ter of the Law re nc ebur g Speedway. An active skydiver, He d ric k was killed in a plane cras h at an air show on July 16. Jesse Roeder go t the initia l holeshot in the Pro-Am feature , followed by Pat Berhle and the rest of the field, but his lead lasted only a lap as Matt Auxier was bumped goi ng in to tum one. fell. and brough t ou t the red flag. Au xier was unhurt and the race was resta rted . On the restart Gary Stogsdill got the holeshot and took a wireto-wire victory. Stogsdill was followed across the finish line by Behrle, Roeder, Mike Butler, and the rest of the field. Butler pressured Roeder for the last few laps but was unable to make the pass. Bu tler won the Whitaker " Mile" Dash for Cas h race in memory of the late Charles Whitaker. The " Mi le ", 5 la ps o n th e 1 /5 th m ile Lawre nceburg ova l, was a featu red event w ith a $300 winner-tak e-all purse. Butler took the lead a t the start and rode a solid race for the w in. Stogsdill took second, followed by Roede r and Behrle, who overca me a second - row start to get up to his fourth-place finish . . The we t race track took it' s toll in the 250cc fea tu re. Stogsdill go t the ho lesho t and seemed headed for the win followed by Scott Clevenger, Travis Burnell , Phil Wolf, and the res t of the field . On lap four, Burn ett lost both ends and slid down into the fence. On the next lap, in the same turn, Stogsdill pu t his foot in a tacky spot which literally dragged him off his bike. Youngman III hauls at Summit Point Road Race By Kenny Abbott SUMMIT POINT, WV, JULY 16-17 Virgini a Breeze Racin g' s Pa ul Youngma n III took ad va ntage of a repaved Su mmit Poin t Race way to win the GTO class . He ran a way w ith the w in ahe ad of forme r track -record holder Jeff Atw ell, who finished seco nd . First-year Expert Eric Kropp finis hed third . In oth er raci ng actio n, Richard Bolena an d Michael Vadney ran away with the Expert Solo GlU race on their Yamaha VZ2SOs, wi th Bolen taking the win. . With 67 en tries in the amateur event, it was sp lit into tw o separate races, the usual here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Both races provided plen ty of action thro ughout, with Kevin Dill and David Henderson wi n ni ng th eir re sp ec ti ve races. Bryan McGee ha d a co nvi nci ng lead in race number one, but cras hed with only a few laps to go. McGee did re-enter the race and finished eighth. ' Paul Youngman started Sunday's competition just as he did the day before wi th a convincing win in the Unlimited Supe rsport even t aboard his Honda 900. Glen Szare k won the Heavyweigh t Supersport race on his new Ya ma ha YZF600.. Szarek al so won the tw o-l ap Mid dlew eight Supersport, and the two-lap main even t. Unlimited GP on his Honda 600 in pouring rain. After falling off in practice on Saturday and being transported to the hosp ital, Donny Unger return ed on Sunday to w in both Lightweight and Heavyweigh t Su pertwins eve n ts. Michael and Anne Fulcher celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary this weekend wit h Michael winning b oth Amateur He av yweig h t Su perb ik.e and Heavyweight Supersport events. The rain started at the end of race six of the scheduled 18 races. The AMA/CCS race di rector a nd for mer race r Da vid Mu rr a y, along w ith MARRC safety director Roger Lyle put a hold on the racing un til the entire racing surface was consistent before starting the rema ining eve nts. The nu mber of laps in the re maining races had to be sho rtened d ue to time restri ctions. Some of the races were short ed to four laps; other to just two laps.
