Morehead tops "trial"Pittsburgh Half Mile By Dave Hoenig Photos by Rat Trak Fotos PITISBURGH,P A,jULY17 n hopes of returning major league di rt track racing to the Pittsburgh area, the Pennsylvania Motor Speedway hosted a half-mile Regional 'o n the Sunday evening' following the Hagerstown Grand National. Late scheduling and a 7:30 pm starting time contributed to a small field of riders, but a good turnout of spectators. Everyone was sea rching for the righ t combina tion, as it was the first time motorcycles were allowed on the wide, banked speedway. "That's really a s lic k witch," said 750cc feature-winner Steve Morehead. "We've changed everything at least once. It's (t he b ike) been shorter, longer, lower and h igher. But so I noth in g has clicked. It's slick but very fast:' The firs t "main" of the night was the Smitty's Ch allenge for the six fastes t Harley-Davidsons from the heat races. Davey Camlin had the quickes t reaction as th e ligh t flashed green. As the race began to u nfold, Morehead clo sed on Camlin but co uldn 't fo rce h is way around, and Camlin pocketed the win and the $1000 first-place chec k. In diana 's Gary Stogsdill ran aw ay with th e Pro-Am main as Dan Brown a nd Recil Hart entertained the cro wd w ith a grea t r ace for second. Bro wn held on to edge Hart for runner-u p honors. Tommy Colson led the 883 main the first tw o laps, but Scott Stu mp powere d h is Wimmer's Sp orts ter into th e lead on lap three. Colson stayed close until th e last la p when Stump p ulled clear. The 600cc main had to be red-flagged on lap one when Chris Hart fell in tum on e, then John Vanderkooi bailed off on the back straight. Bret Beyer nailed the restart and ran away from a great race for se cond between Les Washbon and Hart. The two exchanged secon d several times before Hart took over on the last lap. Camlin lined up on the outside to start the 750cc feature; it would prove to be his undoing. "1 knew I needed a good start but it jus t ju mped sideways when I hammered it," said Camlin. "I climbed the wall and was dead-last into tum one. " Morehead was off and running well ahead of Stump, Jess and Geo Roeder, Rayburn and Varnes. Morehead pulled away and cruised to an easy win. "We knew w e had to make a lot of changes after the challenge," said Morehead . Then when I got the good start all I had to d o was sta y consistent: ' Stump he ld d own seco n d while Geo Roeder settled into third. Roed er would soon drop ba ck, the victim of brake problems. All t he while, Camlin was methodically movin g up through the field. On the last lap, Camlin chall enged Stump but to no avail. Varnes held off Colson for fourth with Jess Roed er lead- battle for top ho no rs in the 250cc Pro class at round four of the Marty Smith Supercross Series a t Sta rwest. Chuck Gra ves and several of the other frequen t victors in the F-l event we re racing on the East Co ast this weekend, and McDonald used their absence to his advantage. Although he cu rrently lea ds in the poin t sta nd ings in the F-2 class, this was his first victory in the F-l event. As the F--l race got u nderway, it was Curtis Adams who emerged w ith the early lead with Steve Mo reno running in second. Mc Donald spent most of the first lap threading h is way through several rid ers , an d by the ti me he reached the back stretch. he moved himself up into third place. McDonald kept his charge going. setting his sights on Moreno in second pla ce. At one point during the second lap , McDonald nearl y made a move around Moreno but was sh ut-out in the comer. Startin g the third lap, More no suddenly slowed going into tum one, allow ing McDon ald to make the move to tak e ove r second on his Maxima Racing Oil-sp onsored Yamaha TZ250. As lap five got unde rway, McDona ld wa s cha llenging Ada ms for the lead . At the sa me time, Mor eno was feeling the heat from John Hilton. Howe ver, it w as Hilton emerging with second, followed by Adams and Moreno. At the line, it was McDonald with the win, Hilton second and Adams th ird . Frank Aragaki led the F-2 riders off the line and was followed by McDonald and Cli n ton Whitehouse. Aragaki foun d himself under pressu re from McDonald immed iately, and the gap between the two riders was slim for the first lap. Heading into tum eight, McDonald moved up along the outside of Aragaki and , as they rounded tu m nine, McDona ld took over the lead as Aragaki backed off slightly. A lap later, McDonald had established himself in a firm lead and the only close battle underway was one developing between Aragaki and Whitehouse . White house, however, never cou ld qu ite mo unt a challenge on Aragaki , and at the line, it was McDonald with the win followed by Aragaki in second and Whitehouse third. ther was able to gain any ground on th e other.
